R2 is slightly more iconic and recognizable to the layperson than Threepio. Although seen as a pair, Artoo has definitely been more the screen time droid accompanying Luke around everywhere and in the Prequels being Anakin's personal Droid as well as the Queen's. Its also easier to house an Artoo in your home than a Threepio and he'll be less money that's for sure.

I want Artoo but if he's 17,000 They can keep him. I'll stick a dome on a trash can and go nuts with Sharpie Markers.....
