hey all

Ok, I know just enough to get myself in trouble.....while I do download tv shows on occasion and stream movies via netflix or hulu or whatnot, I make sure to have the triple protection: virus, firewall and spy ware...always run them - usually once every other day, etc....but as of late, my system had been slow...I got the 'Not responding' message every other minute.....started giving up hope...

....So, I decided to run a program that helps me check for driver updates, and bam! Had to update 9 different ones; took an hour, but now my computer is fast (again)

lesson of thread: dont forget those driver updates!!!

the problem with AV/spyware programs is that none of them will catch everything. i used to use 3 different spyware programs and i'd run them 1 after the other and all 3 would find different things.

What program did you run to find out what drivers you needed to update?

I had never heard of it...called driver genius pro edition....now, it wasnt free (reason I was generic in my topic cause this really aint a plug), but it worked

I have been basically using google to look at suggestions...and all the obvious ones came up: dump temp files, check for virus/spyware, defrag the harddrive, etc

Did all that, and nothing had been working....paid the $ out of desperation, but it seems to have worked........

I should meantion that I have been using the MS Windows Live Care, combined with Spy Dr, then doing the occasional check with Spybot search

I agree with the above comment about not all vireus/spyware catching everything...they just dont. Even ran the programs in Safe mode....seemed to catch extra stuff, but not really practical

Thanks, SS!

Man, what a good 'computer' day....got my rig working well again, updated everything, created a guest accnt so I can have some sense of security if people stay with me, AND finally found a way to have a pic displayed in its native resolution (or size, really) for the background image..!!!!

Someone tell me Windows 7 is way more user friendly than Vista

here's another suggestion as well for others that might not now...

How to rebuild Indexes (Windows XP & Vista)

This could take a while so watch a movie or something unless you have a pretty speeding machine.
