I'm genuinely surprised to read all the negativity about Independence Day. Didn't know it was so looked down on.

I've watched it fairly recently and still thoroughly enjoy it.

:lecture

I watched it maybe two or three years ago and enjoyed it. It's on par with Congo and Waterworld for me. It's one of the last VHS tapes on our shelf! I have always planned on upgrading it if I can find it for $3-$5 at Disc Replay.

I remember being pretty disappointed with it. The trailers made it out to be sorta bleak but it seemed almost like a comedy when my friend and I went to see it in the theatres. It's just a fairly forgettable and generic action movie, IMO. No chance I'd be interested in a sequel. Wish we getting more stuff like Blade Runner or Alien/Aliens than this garbage (and I just mean in the same spirit as those films, not direct sequels).

Just out of curiosity, Sachiel, what about the movie seemed exceptional to you or worth a sequel? To me it seems pretty evident they're scraping the bottom of the barrel to go this far back for sequel material.

You weren't asking me but I'm going to give my 2 cents anyway. I know ID4 wasn't the most original of ideas for a film and certainly city destruction isn't much of a novelty today but back in 96 it was. CG was still relatively new and cool. I grant you the new films won't be able to sell themselves on CGI and buildings blowing up alone, afterall we just got that in MOS and audiences are no longer all that amazed by it. So the new films could be crap and pointless if they fail to deliver anything beyond that. But I'm still curious enough to see if they can make it worthwhile.

I liked the characters as a kid. A government leader, a military man, and a scientist and their families. I liked the cast too (Will Smith included, this was one of his better movies in my opinion). The CGI was top notch for its day. The alien designs were cool. I have memories of the video game on N64 as well as the action figures that came with Floppy Discs of mini puzzle games I spent literal hours solving. I watched and rewatched the movie over and over with my dad, friends, and by myself. I think it grew stale for me at some point during middle school and it was only a few years ago as a recent college graduate that I decided to revisit it. It did not disappoint. I like the lighter comedic tone with the melodrama woven in. This is a fun movie and something like this is usually doesnt get made these days. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (Avengers in particular) come to mind.

This thread's inspired me to either track down the DVD or visit a house with a VCR to rewatch this on July 4.

What a hilariously bad movie!

My favorite part has to be that the Alien Computers were apparently compatible with ours.

Let's infect this totally alien, advanced race with a computer virus.

Right! :rotfl

Not "ours" a Macintosh. Which at the time was one of the most difficult systems to network. LOL

I remember as a kid *****ing about the canyon scene being a ripoff of the beggars canyon scene in Shadows of the Empire (which had just come out a few months before).

I like that movie, I'm not even embarrassed to say it. It was amazing when I was kid and it's still cool now that I'm older. I hope the second one lives up to the first, cause I look forward to watch it.

I like the first one, i remember it being a big hit and having the toys. It was a big blockbuster that kind of paved the way for how generic they are now, but at the time it was gold.

I will def see the sequels, hopefully they are done well.

Release date has changed from July 3rd, 2015 to July 1st, 2016.
