Insurance for you collection, where do you get it at

I've always found Toy Tracker to be way off for some figures (PFs, statues, and busts I have no idea b/c I don't buy 'em). For example, they have SS Platoon King at $60 and he's around 3x that now.

Toy Tracker is not completely accurate, but for relative guesstimates of current secondary market values, its a good tool. Also, since I'm not insuring by the piece but rather the entire collection, overall numbers suffice. If a time came where I had to claim, I (and the insurance company I imagine) would get more concrete numbers and sort out by piece.

I wanted to dig this thread out of retirement and talk about it.
Insurance is one of those things that I think about doing about once a month and then I forget about it, but it's something as my collection continues to grow more and more I need to do something about.

At one point I called GEICO, who does my home owners and they said they cannot insure collectibles. Im not sure if this person knew what they were talking about or not, but I would be willing to pay for a 3rd party policy.

My question to my fellow Freaks is what do I need to do in preparation for talking to someone seriously about it?

I mean, 95% of my collection has come from my debit card, but outside of hoping that my bank can go back for 3-4 years in records, I'm not sure if I have what I need. My sideshow and Hot Toys stuff can be proven through Sideshow, if an adjuster had to call them, but I doubt I have kept every single email invoice.

Some variables I also have no clue how they account for:

- Customs. These things can run in the $400-$1000 range and are not replaceable. Do insurers take into account what you PAID or what they feel it's worth? I know I dropped $700 for a 1/6 Bill the Butcher, but there's no "store" it came from...how does this work?

- Props. I have a complete Boba Fett costume, Sandtrooper Costume, Snow Trooper Costume and Biker Scout all on mannequins. Propmakers are usually "underground" and most of the time artisans just like the Customs issue. Do I have to have a paper trail for every part of the costume, along with paypal receipts etc?

The whole process seems very overwhelming.

Can anyone shed some real light on what I need to be prepared for?

THanks

I'm also very curious about this, as a majority of my collection is custom work.

You guys are smart for having insurance ...

I just got insurance around 3 weeks ago through my home owners (Liberty Mutual). So I can only tell you what that
companys stance is.
I didn't have to provide any recipts or anything but in case something does happen then that's when I would have to start
providing proof of my purchase's. So putting pics of your comllection in your e-mail or photobucket would be ideal imo. Also
they told me they go off of total markey value on each piece which was really important to me. I would assume finished
ebay auctions and toytracker would give a rough estimate. As for the customs I would say keep your PP or CC recipts.

My original home owners plan covered around a $154,000. Out of that amount the rep told me that art/collectibles were only
covered up to $2,500 which made no sense to me but I wasn't surprised. That's when I added the seperate policy for
my statues.

Trust me man it took me years of saying I need to do this before I did. I have to admit it took a lot off my shoulder's after it was
done. I hope some of this info was helpful.

It will depend on if you have a renter's policy or homeowner's policy.

Like some of the others have said, my collection is covered under my household contents portion of my policy. Each year I re-evaluate how much coverage I have and if the collection has grown substantially, I then increase the $$ amount of the household contents.

My insurance is through USAA. The best part is that I'm covered for full replacement costs...for example, if I still had my PF Doom and it got broken, I would be insured for the current market value instead of the original cost.

A database of your collection is a good idea, but keep in mind most insurance companies value pictures a lot more.

Does it cover your collectibles if the damage is caused by an earthquake?

If you have house insurance, call and talk to them about it first.

In my case I called and Geico was at least honest with me, they said they don't really offer coverage that I'm truely looking for and suggested some 3rd party insurance.

Those of you that said your insurance covers market value prices, can you explain how that works with any customs/undergrounds you may have? If you own for example, a custom Rainman piece that you paid $700 for and they have since sold out. To buy another would not be an option, and to buy one from another member would be a lot higher amount, but there are no "going market rates" for this kind of thing.

This gray area is what concerns me...

My renters and earthquake insurance do not cover collectibles. And similarly, every month I get an email ad from the link that Dagger posted and every month I think I better get on it.

Well, today I came home from work and my neighbor, who had been using my oven to bake, accidentally put the oven on to Broil instead of Off. I came home to a *very* hot kitchen- the back wall and counter were actually hot to the touch. I am so grateful I came home when I did!

Needless to say, I'm finally getting this insurance thing handled this weekend.
