Is Sideshow gearing itself AWAY from 1/6 Figures?

Um......So Heroes was awesome tonight. LOL! Honestly find the nearest hole and do something with it. :D IE stop fighting over something so stupid. I used to create flame posts just to see how long people would go. This is getting crazy and out of hand. You are all grown men trash talking toys. Don't get me wrong I love them. Spending ALL DAY ARGUING ABOUT THEM IS GETTING NUTS! You all have your right to an opinion. Just let someone talk and don't argue. If any company makes something that represents any movie I love I will enjoy it. I won't care what someone else says. With the exception of the Jedi Luke from Medicom that is. LOL! That was so a joke but true.

Honestly! Please revert back to my original post. Find something interesting to talk about. Although I do love Josh defending to the end! Keep up the good fight!

The actors' likenesses were not negotiated so they wouldn't have to pay them royalties. Minor paint differential. Who cares. These are sold as models so painting is required.

This is a bit of flawed argument... these aren't sold as model kits because they are intended as models. My understanding (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) is that they are sold and packaged that way because its cheaper to import them as models than as action figures.

Which is fine for some figures. For instance, Robocop and Alien are fully painted and look awesome straight outta the box and all ya gotta do is snap them together.

But for the Marines; $90 (with shipping) is a lot to pay for a figure that requires one to have to buy a different head and/or have it repainted so it will even sort-of resemble the actor. Its nice that Hot Toys could save some money on the likenesses but its not like the savings are passed onto us.

With the monty python and early bond days, sideshow was able to churn out and sell 12,000 figures each. Not sure what happened. Star wars doesn't even come close. I think the 1/6 line is running out of steam with lower and lower edition sizes. As the ed sizes get smaller, statues probably wind up taking over, but with breakages a problem, sideshow would love to go the route of boba PF. Bigger money for bigger plastic. But, I hope cancellations stopped that idea in its tracks. Anyway, I think sideshow makes the best 1/6 figures out there. They are great. Wish I had them as a kid.

My understanding is that Hot Toys presents them as "models" because they do not have the action figure rights. Therefore by issuing a figure which must be assembled they have once again found use of a loophole.

It's a loophole to import them and also to get around likeness rights. Really though, what difference does it make? We are getting a licenced product in 1:6 scale that requires assembly and/or painting. Either way, Hot Toys is making the most impressive 1:6 "Action Figure Model Kits" ever made. I really don't mind it if it takes an hour or two to put together a Predator when the end result beats anything else out there period.

I think some of the initial figures with large EDs were sold in brick and mortar stores. So they saw wider distribution. Also (I'm pretty sure) those sold out over a much longer period of time than the newer stuff.

Yeah the early figures were sold at places like Spencers (I think I got the name right) and I think one of those is in (almost) every mall. With that the casual person might pick it up. Now they are more exclusive.

Not unless the triads have full range articulation, which they don't. They sacrifice full range so they can "look nice" Action figures move. Don't like joints, buy statues.
I did say "for certain characters as well." that would apply to Slave Leia and the like. I didn't mean they all should be on Triad Bodies. ;)
I love Hot Toys' new basic bodies, in my opinion they're the best available right now.

I agree, the Hot Toys NGL is just the best all-around human body figure for articulation and definition. Too bad they are so damned expensive otherwise I'd replace every one of my Sideshow Buck's with them.

I originally planned to replace all my older Hot Toys bodies with them, but that's a little cost prohibitive for me right now. Strangely enough, the parted out Hot Toys NGL was quite a bit cheaper before they released the generic replacment bodies. They may be much easier to find now, but I kinda wish they didn't come out, I could've afforded them back then. I did manage to buy about 5 of them though before the price rise.

The "collectibles" market as a whole has been on a downward slide for several years due to changing consumer tastes and the economy tanking, especially in geek-heavy indiustries. Retailers that made this category (and Sideshow's products) a chunk of their bread and butter went under (Tower, Mediaplay). Prices had to rise as a result (not saying this is the only reason for price rise), which further cut into demand.

That's a partial explanation for "what happened".

Well, the SDCC exclusives are announced and if that last question mark is a Dead then it will be THE ONLY 12" articulated figure offered as an exclusive.

So to respond to the question posed in the thread's heading... I would say, um, yes. :monkey2 :monkey2 :monkey2

Just thought I'd Necropost this thread... but I have a reason.

Its crazy how less than a year ago there was fear that Sideshow might completely abandon the 1/6 market. But now from basically having 4 active licenses (SW, LOTR, The DEAD and Wayne) we've got a lot more to choose from in 1/6.

Star Wars
Lord of the Rings
The Dead
Indiana Jones
GI Joe
Reservoir Dogs
Shaun of the Dead
Darkman

And we have 3 new 1/6 body types announced. Not to mention we'll soon be seeing Armored characters!!!

I think its fairly safe to say that Sideshow and 1/6 will be spending a lot of time hanging out together in the future :rock :rock :rock

Chicken little is always exposed as little more than a worm in the end (not THE worm, mind you). ;)

No, that would be a serious worm...

I agree, but I have to say even though I didn't think they'd abandon 1/6 altogether it did seem like we were seeing a lot less variety of product. But man, next year is gonna be lousy with new stuff :rock

Ya, know--Sideshow did really do a 360 when it comes to licensing aggressiveness. SW seemed a little lofty a few years ago, but they've done a really nice job. And I'm not a SW fanboy by any means, but the fact that a 1/6 Jabba exists is pretty cool. LOTR did too, especially when it seemed like there was no plan for a hobbit body type. I never would have thought we'd see SS G.I. Joes or even better 1/6 Reservoir Dogs. Indy looks effin sweet and the B-movie stuff is aways fun when the characters don't exist in the 1/6 form already.

I guess when you bang out some sweet POTAs, 007s, Slashers, Monsters, and members of Monty Pyhton over a 6-7 year period, you deserve some props. :clap:clap:clap
