People say flying is statistically safer than riding in a car, I say there are less flights. It's a statistical lie. I always worry about the upkeep of older airplanes, the mental and physical well-being of the pilot, and just the general condition of the aviation market. They barely make ends meet so of course they would cut some corners to keep operating their business.

Flying in my opinion is always risky business... I will be drugged up when I head to California soon. :lol

Why did you post this right before I start packing up for San Francisco?? :monkey2

Milwaukee to SF is a looooooong way. Now I'm going to be thinking I'm going to die the whole flight, thank you very much.

Flying in planes that weigh tons is just incredibly unnatural man. :lol They want you to feel safe but there are just way too many variables to account for. What if the plane technicians are having a bad week and slack on their jobs, what if nobody notices the rust that's been building up in some inconspicuous spot? Statistically you'll be fine flying but I would rather drive.

My aunt died in a plane crash when I was a little kid. She was on a commercial aircraft that crashed into the mountains. This stuff happens a lot more than we think.

if you crash in a plane you'll probably die. thats what sucks, there aren't really any "minor accidents".

but overall, I trust pilots and airplane mechanics more than the morons driving 2 feet behind my bumper on the interstate and jawing on the cellphone.

Crashing in a plane is pretty much a guaranteed ending to your life. :lol

I hate the takeoffs and the landings the most... followed by just being up in the air. :lol Eventually I get used to it but I always think about how unnatural it is to be speeding up so fast and then suddenly being off the ground. Then the pilot always tilts the plane so that you can see the ground shrink away as you ascend upwards. Then I always think well, this is it. If we go down, it's over. What if these window seals don't hold, or the stewardess didn't shut the door right, what if it's worn down too much from over-usage? :lol

How many times has your car broken down unexpectedly?

i think flying has just gotten more stressful after 9/11 in general. I used to just arrive at the airport like 1/2 early, get on the plane and its off. there wasn't any time to get worried or anything.

now its like, get there 2 hours early only to sit and wait, people watch (and you know you all do this) look to see if there are any potential terrorists on board.

How many a year survive car wrecks as opposed to plane crashes?

from what I can find in 10 minutes on the web:

There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the US in 2005. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed. so a lot of people survived. (though I can't find any info on what their conditions are after the crash. crippled, brain dead, full recovery, etc)

commercial plane crash generally happens once or twice or none per year. (most crashes are smaller planes, like JFK jr, etc) but survival rate is probably zero.

Well if that statistic is correct...roughly 39,000 people die in car crashes per year...compared to 500 in planes....either way the outcome sucks. You may survive a car crash...but then you may also be paralyzed....

I personally hate flying...but have had to travel a lot with my job...just always hope for the best...that's really all anyone can do whether they be riding in a plane or a car or even a train for that matter.

Well, I'm like Rory. I always think about how myself and my coworkers perform on a bad day and then think about how many technicians, mechanics and whathaveyou had a bad day when they worked on the plane I'm sitting on.:lol Kinda creeps me out so I try not to think about it too long.
