i used to fly constantly............went thru a time where i feared it but after about the first 6 or 7 times that fear leveled off and turned into......."damn i gotta catch another flight".:banghead

i found that alcohol takes the edge off a bit...:D

pix.........i hate turbulence as well & have more than a few horror stories of going thru it....:horror

I don't mind turbulence so much as I do the landings. Especially the ones where it feels like the wheels are gonna get ripped off as they hit the ground and slam on the brakes.

People say flying is statistically safer than riding in a car, I say there are less flights. It's a statistical lie. I always worry about the upkeep of older airplanes, the mental and physical well-being of the pilot, and just the general condition of the aviation market. They barely make ends meet so of course they would cut some corners to keep operating their business.

Flying in my opinion is always risky business... I will be drugged up when I head to California soon. :lol

It's not a statistical lie. Youre right, the amount of planes cant compare to the sheer mass of automobiles out there...however any dumb idiot can get a drivers license.

To get a pilot's license takes strict training and to get to the professional level you would not believe the kind of requirements you need from your personal health to flight performance standards etc.

As for me, I'd choose to be in the air over driving on the road any time. I actually wish I could fly every where, avoid traffic and incompetent drivers

Well, I'm like Rory. I always think about how myself and my coworkers perform on a bad day and then think about how many technicians, mechanics and whathaveyou had a bad day when they worked on the plane I'm sitting on.:lol Kinda creeps me out so I try not to think about it too long.

man, that can be applied to anything you dont make yourself. your car, your house/apartment, even the road you walk/drive on. :lol

Most modern aircraft have capabilites to probably fly themselves from take off and landing.

The reason there are TWO pilots is because if one should have a 'bad day' the other is there to take care of it. Same with the aircraft systems....there are so many redundant systems built in to prevent this type of thing.

If only you all knew how much goes into the air travel industry from the pilots to the aircraft im sure you would all feel much much safer.

I bet that's true too, nash, that the more you learn about how they're flown and built the safer you'd feel.

Human error though, it's a scary thing.:lol Probably something I'd always have in the back of my mind.

BUt then again, human error applies to automobiles as well. And human error happens in driving WAY more than it ever will in an aircraft. yet, because driving is so familiar to us all, it's not seen as much of a big deal.

Im pretty sure 95% of people you know have all been in an automobile accident of some sorts. Im a pilot, never been in an accident in 6 years of flying.

Familiarity does play a huge part in feeling safer in a car than a plane. I think that having more control over the car as compared to no control in the plane is a factor too.

True, but i think feeling like you have control in a car is an illusion. you may drive well but there are hundreds of other people driving that you will pass by every day whom you have no control over. one mistake on their part could include you into their accident.

In an airplane the whole environment is 'controlled' by air traffic control. perhaps as a passenger you dont feel the control issue because you are not physically flying the plane...but neither are the pilots. 95% of the time the plane is on auto-pilot and being directed which direction to head and what altitude to fly at by ATC.

I wouldn't call it an illusion but that you don't have full control over you're surroundings. Still what little control I have over the vehicle I'm driving is a comfort. And Don't try and take that from me, nash! :lol

if you crash in a plane you'll probably die. thats what sucks, there aren't really any "minor accidents".

but overall, I trust pilots and airplane mechanics more than the morons driving 2 feet behind my bumper on the interstate and jawing on the cellphone.

AMEN!!! Or texting!!!!

i HATE flying.

i've flown around 50 times. i only landed with the aircraft about 10 of them. why i joined the airborne, no idea.

the worst was the flight home from iraq. i got my arm in a huge bloody bandage with a coat hanger sticking out of my wrist to keep my thumb from falling off. it was a c-141 star-lifter with no seats just red cargo nets. 18 hours home, no stop, horrible turbulence. i was high on oxycontin for the trip but wished it would crash just to alleviate the cramps in my legs.

the second worst for me was flying to kuwait on a 747 PACKED with troops. 18 hours with a 30 minute stop in Germany. all the stewardesses were old ladies that looked like my 8th grade english teacher except one in her mid 40's that looked like a cracked out mimi rogers. she was taking joes 2 at a time to the galley for "good luck kisses"
i took 6 nyquil tabs and was in a stupor for most of it while packed in center aisle coach plus gear.

although any c-47 nap of the earth jump usually involved me wishing the plane would explode because of all the vomit being tossed around the cabin.

enough whining from me.....enjoy this video on flying
