Why bother? It's A Wonderful Life is a movie people only throw on in the background while they cook their Christmas dinner, that's the only relevance it still has in modern culture.

Indeed. The moral core of the movie is pretty much the core of contemporary American ethics.
I wanted to reply earlier but didn't get time as I'm stuck at work, but glad others beat me to it.
I think the story and message of the movie is timeless. The idea of somebody having a really bad day, feeling worthless and like they can't go on, and then being shown how important they are. Being reassured that they do make a difference and that they matter, is frankly a brilliant sentiment and one that has been missing from cinema for a long long time. It gives a great sense of self worth.
There's a reason it's a classic.
