I have a soft spot for '86, because it was that summer that I sold off all my 82-85 figures because Junior High was starting the following fall. I remember thinking I was too cool to keep action figures but then when the 86 Sears Wishbook came out that Christmas I couldn't help but lust over the Tomahawk, Night Raven, Beach Head, B.A.T.'s and others.
I got my fix through the comics that featured Snakes and Storm Shadow attacking Cobra Island and the debut of GI Joe: Special Missions.
Since I never got to play with the figures from that year I really like the idea of getting them as high end collectibles.

I actually don't remember stopping playing with G.I.Joe. I was 11 in '86. The only two '86 figures I have any recollection of are Beachhead and the Viper. I don't even remember BATS.
My prime was '84. I was already a huge Destro fan, and the addition of Baroness, Firefly, Storm Shadow and Scrap Iron put me through the roof.
I think I might have got my first bass around Christmas time '86 (a hand-me-down from the same uncle who got me into Black Sabbath), so that might explain why Joes fell off the radar.
