Miscast, but played the character well.

Agree.

I've been trying to think of someone who would fit the character both physically and attitude-wise, and I really can't. Someone like John Cena would probably fit the look to a T, but he doesn't have the acting chops. The Rock is close physically, but technically shouldn't be dark/ethnic, and I don't think he can get as intense as Reacher should. I thought maybe Stephen Amell from Arrow would be a good fit because he is in great physical shape, is tall-ish (6'1"), and is a pretty good Tom Cruise clone so he could do the intense act. But he's too young.

Although I like Zwick and think he's a great director, I do have my doubts that he could pull off such a tight thriller like McQuarrie did. I'm just not sure it's in his wheelhouse.

McQuarrie is such a underrated (or is he?) director/writer. He does great caper movies, has some excellent bits of dialogue and knows how to get technical stuff right when it comes to gunplay/tactical stuff.

Perhaps he was miscast, but then again, so have most of the characters from books. Anyone who read the Ludlum Bourne trilogy knows how far off the mark the films were. Good on there own, but for a fan of the book series, they came up short.

One of the best book-to-film casting choices was Edward Fox in the Day of the Jackal.

Regardless of that, and admittedly, I hadn't even heard of Reacher before the movie, I found that he played the role in the film well. There are few actors out there that do action scenes as well as Cruise, the guy just moves well in the shooting/fighting scenes. Hell, watch the behind-the-scenes clips with Mich Gould (former 22 SAS) training Cruise for Collateral, and compare that to Gould training Farrell and Fox for Miami Vice; Cruise actually looks like he is a shooter, the other guys look like actors trying to shoot.

The author Lee Child doesn't have a problem with Cruise as Reacher.
How many good actors are 6'5?
Child said his physical description is mostly a metaphor for his personality/character "Unstoppable"
Granted if you're a fan of the novels to begin with its more of a problem but I wasn't so it didn't bug me.
I dislike Cruise in his personal goings on but find him compelling as an actor especially in "Collateral"
Btw that's the author as the desk Sgt in the first movie.

From one of my early posts, I think Philip Winchester who plays Michael in Strike Back would have been a good choice.

Chris Helmsworth would be perfect.

He looks good. I'm not familiar Strike Back...

In 15 years maybe. For the reboot!

Hemsworth isn't that good of an actor.

Too young and maybe too handsome as well. I get the sense that Reacher is more grizzled and world-weary.

I think Cruise played him great. He may not be intimidating to look at him, but once he shows you what he can do, watch out!

Having never read the books, I also didn't have any problem with the Cruise casting decision. He came off as a believable badass, and that was enough for me.
