If Guillermo Del Toro directs the Hobbit, it will be a masterpiece. 'Nuff Said.
Not unless he is there every single day, and reviewing all of the dailies. He has a very busy schedule, and once principal photography begins, he simply may not have time to be as intimately involved as many people would like.
Besides, del Toro doesn't strike me as the type of director to be satisfied being a puppet. He will want to leave his own mark on the film, not just Jackson's.
See I don't read it this way. I read it as while in scripting and pre-production GDT and Jackson will be collaborating on script issues, visuals, etc. You know "This should be showing this..." or "That should be putting this kind of vibe off..." etc. So there is an understanding from all parties....then when the film moves into production I think GDT will have free reign to do the film in his vain having taken the notes from Jackson already under consideration.
PJ is NOT a the helm but a driving force to get it on screen. This film will undoubtedly be Del Toro's in both look and feel...
Q: To what extent has the work of Tolkien influenced you ? Thank you and much success with the film!
DEL TORO A: Not at all. I could barely finish "The Hobbit". Curiously, that kind of fantasy, never called out to me. I think that fairy tales are in themselves a different genre. Heroic fantasy, in general, leaves me cold. I am more interested in Robert E. Howard's work of terror - his novels about the muscular Conan. Although there are two writers of fantasy that I think are sublime: Clark Ashton Smith and Lord Dunsany.
EW: There’s been so much speculation about who will direct these movies. Have you been approached?
GUILLERMO DEL TORO: You know, I think I’ve been abroad too long. I’ve heard some rumblings, but nothing official. I don’t want to think about it because it’s such an eventuality. It’s the only Tolkien book I read. I tried my best to read Lord of the Rings, the trilogy. I could not. I could not. They were very dense. And then one day, I bought The Hobbit. I read it and I loved it. So it would be a privilege. But listen, I wish I knew. At this stage, after Hellboy II, I’m unemployed.
If they don't at least get the same crew on this film as in LOTR, there will be inevitable problems.
