Not a very common opinion with that one.
Fine by me, the moment when he falls dead onto the platform and the penguins slide him into the water did it for you and that’s fine, just didn’t for me. Eating the fish on screen for what felt like an eternity, just felt like wasted screen time for a few jokes that didn’t land imo. Saying Devito’s penguin is iconic as Nicholson’s Joker is too much for me to get behind.

Penguin's definitely my least favorite part of the film too

Exactly, I genuinely don’t see how that’s not a popular take when Burton’s direction of Devito’s Penguin is the very reason WB canned him for a new director. The audience at large found him appalling to the point WB scrambled thinking the third film and merchandise would tank. People were invested in Batman 89’ because Nicholson was going to be in it, not because of Keaton, they even used another actor to bait him into the role. He made them an unfathomable amount of money and to turn around and deliver that sequel, sent panic waves throughout WB.

Probably at some point, but I wish they'd do the suits properly or what's the point?
I agree, would be nice to see all of the separate panel detailing on the 89’ but they didn’t do it again. A bummer but it only makes sense to buy the Returns 2.0 from them if we’re already buying their 89’ 2.0. I’d like to see a ripped cowl Keaton sculpt that actually looks the part with rolling eyes. You’d think JND would scrap their Harry Potter line in favor of more Batman, I’d love to see what they’re doing with returns 1:3, here in 1:6.

Been a long time since I've watched the film; is it just me or do the cheeks look too round? Might just be the lighting or paint ... or my bad memory.

Penguin I've seen Batman Returns a gazillion times, but I can't for the life of me remember which scene you're referring to here 🤔😫
Sorry I misspoke, it’s the scene where Penguin is playing on the steering wheel while Bruce watches him on the screen in the Batmobile. I mistook it for the duck he drives around in the movie.. who wrote that script..

I don't like the penguin character, but I love the batmobile hijacking scene. You obviously can't get away with that in most films, but the whackiness of the Burton Batman films is part of their charm.

Oh, I’m a fan of most Burton,
sometimes he’s a bit much.

I feel like he’s a virtuoso at developing worlds, and the fascinating multilayered characters littered across most of his body of work. I feel like by the time Returns was in production, he was kind of over it all, we’ve done this already, kind of thing. Along with the pressure of competing with his own prior success that he couldn’t get from under. He was like what 26? When he directed Batman 89’? Right? Crazy.

I don't know. I feel in Returns he came into his own. It has much more of his signature imprint. Perhaps he was even over indulgent. And maybe to the detriment of the film to a degree. So many *** references, and bizarre scenes. Definitely went overboard. But in doing so, a lot of it worked really well. I appreciate the film more because of that. It's much more singular in its direction.

I really love Returns. More than most. More than 89 dare I say. It's for sure a flawed film. But there's a lot.. A LOT about it I can appreciate.

Pfeiffer's Selena being the highlight through and through.

I really hope Jazz nails this man.

I don't want it to be good. I want it to be GREAT.

Take your time Joost. I don't care if you have to increase the price. I don't need preorders to go live in a few weeks. Just make it the best that it can be.

That’s what I meant by he was over it. He’s very intelligent, he knew this film wouldn’t fly, with the audience, nor with the executives at WB. They didn’t want Burtons personality attached to Batman and he knew it.They wanted him to continue along with the goldmine he presented before them originally, again on Returns, so what’s he do? He weaves *** jokes into a Batman film set around Christmas which caught everyone off guard. The way it was written, was no accident.

Oh I see. Yeah, maybe he was. Maybe he figured he had one left in him so he'd go all out.
