Re: Jean-Claude Van Damme "Bloodsport" Premium Format

For some reason, Van Damme was the biggest for me when I was younger, far above Stallone and Schwarzenegger and others. His films always have that same plotline that always excites me, even to this day: man is pushed around, he gets beaten down, no one thinks he can win, and then in the end, kapow!

Kickboxer was my very favourite of these.

Not sure about that, but I'd be down for Carlos as Braddock. :rock

MPW-39120

Another real martial artist. :lol

:lecture :goodpost: :exactly:

i just watched missing in action the other night. i wish hot toys would make a braddock...:drool

Van Damme wasn't bigger than Schwarzenegger for me but bigger than Stallone when I was younger. I would like to see some kind of collectible of Van Damme made one day, a PF preferably but not sure what movie, but Bloodsport or Kick boxer would be a good start

Re: Jean-Claude Van Damme "Bloodsport" Premium Format

:lol :monkey1 I love how completely one sided the above post is. If you don't want people's opinions, go make a blog. :wave

But in all seriousness, and your blatant personal bias aside, do you honestly think this would be successful enough to be produced? Especially as a Premium Format figure? Do you really think they'd be able to sell enough to justify making it? Seriously?

Though I would argue that Steven Seagal was a bigger star (and a real martial artist). :lol

Of many of the movie star PF's like the obscure "Rocketeer", the John Wayne one where most of us have never even seen the film, not to mention others, I think this one due to cult status would be fine in a 250 edition size...no exclusive. Yeah, I think so. Not really personal bias when you get attacked by being a PF fan in a PF thread by a bunch of 1.6th fans...but nice way of trying to turn things around...

As for martial artist...there's european kickboxing records for JCVD, not to mention many of the guys he has fought coming forward to dispel any of the nonsense that he wasn't a good fighter. As for Seagal, when he wasn't busy claiming to be in the CIA, or protecting the President or some other official or forgetting what was true life and what was a movie, I guess he was a good solo martial artist as he never competed. At least Van Damme competed. Only problem is he competed nearly 30 years ago so nothing that recent.

Thanks to the posters who respected the thread and to the ones that just came in the make fun...get some maturity or pass over the thread.

I wonder if a lot of people hating Van Damme comes down to Euro-bashing. God forbid a Belgian, a Francophone Belgian no less, be respected as a martial artist above the likes of Norris and Seagal.

Well, I for one never really took his martial arts skills into consideration. And Euro-bashing? That's a real thing? Or this a doofy American thing like "freedom fries"? That's lame if it's true. No, I just never really like his movie or him as a person. PF worthy he ain't, that's what I thought this thread was about. :dunno

There's no money in a run of 250. And :lol at you "being attacked." The comment was about the idea of this, and I collect everything, not just 1:6, so you need to get over yourself. A Van Damme PF wouldn't be successful enough. He doesn't have the legacy that Wayne did and nowhere near the built-in fanbase the Rocketeer has (and frankly, that comparison is absurd). As was mentioned earlier, this would go up for preorder and quietly removed from the website and hidden in the locker with the Frasier Mummy PF.

As to Seagal, his credentials don't really need to say anything more than he actually owned a dojo and taught Aikido in Japan. For a westerner to accomplish that much (despite the circumstances of the acquisition, speaks leaps and bounds). And I don't buy any of that about JCVD. He was a flexible dancer. His martial arts skills are no better than Mr. Furley's. It's not "euro-hating" either. Just the fact that out of all the 80's action stars, he was probably the most overrated. The "EU hate" excuse doesn't explain how Lundgren (also from the EU), isn't despised as much as JCVD. :huh

My favorite Van Damme movie was where he gets knocked out by Chuck Zito.

:lol:rotfl:lol:rotfl:lol

I guess you're right...they did a run of 250 for Rambo PF EX and still not sold out...although I think it's more a result of the sculpt.

Rocketeer has a fanbase? Don't get me wrong, I like the movie, but I've not ever run into someone who said, oh, I'm a big Rocketeer fan.

I think you're underestimating the fanbase; he recently started a watch line (go ahead, make a joke) and the cheapest is in the 300 dollar range and most expensive in the 1,000's and the fans have been buying them up. So they are the price of a PF and higher. If we were just talking about US sales, maybe he wouldn't sale a lot, but internationally, he would sale hundreds of units. Despite living in a DTV world for 10 years, he's still got the name recognition and fans to move millions of dollars worth of DVD's/Blu-rays and now with a reality show, he's got even more exposure. I look at all markets, not just the US where he has fallen off the radar.

I can tell you are a Seagal fan, so i am not surprised you defend and take him at face value but don't give any benefit of the doubt to JCVD, despite there being proof of his short European kickboxing career before he came over to the US to get into movies. I didn't know JCVD was actually hated over here except by Seagal and Seagal fans ;)

If the Rambo PF had looked better, overall, it'd be a grail right now. :(

He's been around a hell of a lot longer than the recent movies. ;)

I'm not underestimating his fan base. I've actually almost ordered one of his watches, they are very nice. But that doesn't translate to the collectibles market and the people who buy Premium Format Figures on the regular basis. It'd be a marketing longshot to hope that the figure would sell to non-collecible collectors and as we've seen, guess who's not very good at marketing? :(

Not a fan of Seagal. I think he's a great martial artist, but his acting blows. He has two good movies to his name and a career not much more impressive than Van Damme. I still don't even get why he hides his bald spot behing a slicked back, greasy ponytail and his gut under a leather trench coat. :lol

Fact is, when it comes to nostalgic PF's, neither really fit the bill for success.

I did a poll on a fansite and nearly everyone said they'd buy one. I think this PF is seriously underestimated. But it needs to be part of a line, a martial arts line that includes other martial artists.

I would buy a figure of it with multiple outfits like in the movie if done by HT.But a statue? If a statue ever happens of Van Damme it will never be from Sideshow.

I hope they do a Kickboxer figure/PF

Bloodsport and Kickboxer are so similar in look but with Kickboxer you'd get sweet tarred, glass covered hand wraps.

I know an independent studio is doing a 1/4th "Frank Dux" from "Bloodsport." Not sure what Enterbay is doing, but he will be part of their HD line I believe.

:goodpost:

Cyborg is probably my favourite followed by KB and Bloodsport, it's a shame there isn't any JCVD collectibles around
