Jimmy Fallon did a great job with the Emmies tonight - made it tough to get this review finished!

I'm checking out the newest concept from Gentle Giant tonight, their Jumbo Vintage Star Wars figures. I'll be looking at the Celebration Boba Fett, but I suspect my comments will carry on through the line.

You can find all the reviews at the usual:

And congrats to Jim Parsons! Thanks for reading,

At first, I was as skeptical of this idea as anyone. But as soon as I saw them on display in person at SDCC, I was 110% in.

I'm very curious to see the ES & price on the Jawa... both the cloth & vinyl cape versions. I think that will be a fairly decent bellweather on whether GG is pricing these based solely on the novelty/collectibility alone.

Regardless, I'm in.

I get it. They are a neat idea but to charge people $85 is just crazy.

No one is going to say they like paying $85 for these. But that's not really the point. Besides, lots of SW stuff is hideously overpriced these days, including items from Sideshow and Medicom. These 12" Vintage recreations from GG are wacky and, yes, over-priced, but they honestly pique my interest as someone who's been collecting SW since 1978. So while I'm not at all crazy about the price, my only alternative is to choose not to get them. But I want them. And due to their low ES, this isn't a case of "voting with your wallet". These will all sell through with a quickness.

I love this concept. I definitely won't be in for the whole line at $85 a pop but its really tempting. I agree that the pricepoint should be half of what it is and if I can find others on the secondary market cheaper I may go in for more.

I hope they go for the other vintage figures especially Jedi Luke and I would love to get an "Early Bird Special" type four pack even if it'd be ridiculously priced.

Considering the cost of some of the Medicom VCDs I don't think these are too outrageous (and WAY cooler). I certainly won't be collecting them but I wouldn't hesitate to get a Yoda or Bespin Luke should they get around to them.

That's a pretty good point. I didn't think of that before, because the VCDs don't appeal to me. But these definitely do.

If people pay hundreds of dollars for a 400% Medicom VCD Vader which IMHO look amazingly silly and no one flinches or really bugs about it, I don't see the issue in paying $85 for this. The downside of the high pricing is that I would want a couple of these carded and the pricepoint doesn't really lend itself to that. I love that they'll have double telescoping lightsabers as well. This definitely captures my fondness for the Vintage line and brings memories of playing with them and displaying them, that alone is worth getting a couple.

Carded vs Loose is a non-issue. These are packaged in a way that the figures can be easily removed without damaging the card or packaging and then easily replaced to display in the packaging. Only the truly OCD would need to get more than 1 of any of them (except for variants, of course).

why don't they have the vinyl capes?

They will. You can see that the Vader already does. For whatever reason, the Leia, Jawa & Tusken capes weren't ready.

The capes will be just like the vintage 3 & 3/4 figures. They're even planning to do the Jawa in both vinyl and cloth capes versions. And Han with both big and small heads. Nostalgia all the way.

The comparison to the VCD is about the best comparison I've seen made. I do get it by the way on why some SW fans older than I would want these. They're just not for me because I don't see them being worth the money being asked for them. I'd rather put that $85 towards say a Rex or Cody 1:6th than this. If these where say $40 I might get one just to have one.

Ok, to each his own. And what are the edition sizes anyway? This review is the first I have ever heard of them.

Love the concept and at say £20 would be really tempted but 85 dollars
Too much by far
