At least with the VCDs and environments they are all new sculpts that someone created.

From the look of these, it seems GG just scanned the original toys. And then charge out the ass which SW fans will eat up like everything else.

But that's not what happened. These are all actually brand-new sculpts that were hand-sculpted by a couple guys at GG. Even the seam lines were sculpted in.

I think the difference between these and VCDs is that the VCDs are a unique, detailed representation of the characters vs a large facsimile of an old toy that was never very good to begin with. The only charm the old toys have is nostalgia--they are not superior in any way to current toys. At least VCDs have detail and accuracy going for them.

Gonna have to disagree with you there... the old toys are pretty awesome when you think about it. It is a massive series, that stayed true to the original design over many, many years. Which results in one of the most extensive lines you can find.

Also, I think the style of the figures is a very good balance between looking enough like the characters, but not overdoing it and creating genuinely stupid toys or dipping into the well and making multiple releases of characters wearing bio suits, baseball uniforms or other such nonesense that never happened.

And finally the vintage figures have a great play value, they are pretty sturdy (except for ANH Luke's damn head :cuss) and the vehicles and playsets kick all kinds of ass.

So yeah, the newer toys may look better/more like the real thing. But I don't think that makes the vintage ones any less kickass. And honestly still think they are better toys than 90% of what is currently on the shelves.

I think you're probably letting nostalgia color your view. You're 100% right with everything you said. These were great when I was a young boy. But if you were to see Hasbro take these kinds of liberties with the character designs nowadays, then people would be in an uproar about them. I'm sure you remember how terrible the original 1995 POTF buff figures were.

I still love the old figures I grew up with, but I can recognize that the ones they make now are better in every way.

And it's funny that you mention Luke's head falling off! The same thing happened with mine and I was heartbroken! I remember my older cousin trying to cheer me up by telling me "too bad it wasn't Obi Wan's head that came off!" :lol I never realized it was a common problem with that figure.

Which isn't the point. At all. The nostalgia is the point. They're not supposed to compare to today's products. These are basically collectible tributes to toy history and our own childhoods. That's the very appeal.

Okay I give. I do completely understand the power of nostalgia, believe me. I guess it just boils down to how much nostalgia is worth to each of us.

A quick story:
My friend was going to buy his other friend a birthday present. His other friend is totally into Transformers, so he was debating between finding a vintage Megatron or buying a new resissued version that was apparently better designed and built than the original. He said they would both be about the same price so he really didn't know which one he would prefer. He posed the question to me, and I had to really think about it.

One of my absolute favorite toys growing up was the Six Million Dollar Man action figure. I loved that thing and took it everywhere. However I did loose it somewhere along the way and wanted it back ever since. When I went to college in Manhattan, I found a couple of vintage shops that had the SMDM for sale, but very costly for back then in the early 90s (I think they were going for like ~$80). Once Ebay popped up, I snagged a few Steve Austins for cheap and was elated for finally having that figure back after all those years.

However, now that I had discovered this whole other world of high-end 12" figures, I long for Hot Toys or Enterbay to make a SMDM figure with the current bodies and superior sculpts. So I had to tell my friend, as much as I love my vintage Steve, I would have to say that I would prefer the Hot Toys Steve (if he existed). In other words, if I didn't have my vintage Steve, and were to walk into a store today and saw the vintage and Hot Toys Steves side by side on a shelf, but only enough money to buy one, I would buy the Hot Toys one.

Sorry I went off in this little tangent. I thought it was slightly relevant.

You guys think these are crazy now? Wait until they make Luke and Vader Double Telescoping saber versions exclusive to a convention. Then the ____ will hit the fan!!

They're bound to do something wacky like that. Or an extremely limited Blue Snaggletooth.

A small calculation of what the price should be:
12"/3,75"=3.2
3.2X$10,-= $32,-
$32,- + $3,-(for the bigger packaging)=
$35,-

Plus fees to Hasbro = $15
Plus fees to Lucasfilm = $10
Plus profit for GG = $10
Plus scanning = $8
Plus fees for a one-off sculpt = $10
Plus convention exclusive rip-off fee = $10

Total is $98!! We are actually getting a deal!! :rotfl
