Hey can someone help me out? I had some questions about some of my statues that I posted in the sticky awhile ago. It's the main reason I even joined the forum. Thanks :)

Re: Marvel Fakes on EBay Thread
Ive read through most of these pages and am terrified of ebay now. Has anyone ever heard of any fake PF Mystiques being made. I got mine off ebay in Jan. Its 609 of 800. The bottom of the base says "made in China" and the paint on the gun doesnt quite look like other pictures Ive seen. The peg fits in wobbly too. I wish I could take pics but the camera on my phones broken.

Also I got a Blade vs Dracula Diorama 55 of 400 and the only thing thats kind of odd is the side of the stairs have a slight green tint to them. Do your guys' statues have those things too or no? Thanks

And the Mystique came with the grey styrofoam

Sideshow used to use a grey Styrofoam, not to say that someone couldn't have just used the same stuff but it looked like this

Captain+America+Sideshow+Premium+Format+Exclusive+PF+%28Styrofoam+top%29.png

And usually it said "Sideshow Collectibles" on it.

The listing doesn't say Sideshow, so I wouldn't consider it counterfeit.
Counterfeit. E before I. This thread's title is counterfeit.:)

This statue is just a recast, or a copy, but as long as they don't claim to be something it is not, it isn't counterfeit.

The base is fugly colored. It's a real shame with this recast crap that is going on with this hobby.

Agreed, that base looks horrible. Better off saving for a few months and getting the real deal than endorsing the recast crap imo.

I'm of two minds re fakes. On one side I am firmly against it. I believe that the work invested in building these pieces should be respected. I think ethically it is dead wrong.

Then I think that on the other side these statues are grossly overpriced and getting more expensive. The cost barriers to being a collector are getting higher and with this strategy of market skimming SS has to accept that alternatives and black market sellers will come around to satisfy the demand.

For me I only buy the real deal.

I've never heard of a mystique PF fake. It's extremely hard to fake mix-media statues and to my knowledge, it has never been done....on any statues.

The earlier PFs all came with grey styrofoam. Mystique was one of them. SSC just recently just started using grey styrofoam again. The quality of grey styrofoam is actually better hen the white ones.

I highly doubt the blade vs Dracula diorama is a fake. There is very little demand to make it worth while to knock off.

I think you are safe on both statues being legit.

I always have an issue w/ I's and E's.. Maybe I'm dyslexic, can never get it right.

As to your theory, whatever...

Supporting recasting is bad

:goodpost: I actually agree with Ink for a change ;)

I don't understand recasts or why anyone would want to buy one. I remember buying what I thought was a HT Hellboy when I was into figures, it was actually pretty good but because I realised I had bought a fake I ****ing hated it.

I know some argue about the secondary price's but that's just part of the hobby. In time you to will own Statues, Busts or Figures which will be sort after by others who are just coming into the hobby & it will carry on that way but there's nothing better than saving up & hunting down a piece you really want. It took me quite awhile to hunt down some pieces & it cost me quite a bit of money but it was all worth it once I owned them. Funny thing is I actually like the hunt for personal Grails

$400-$600 for a chinese production line made PF is really gouging the customer though. i know some of you die hard guys will buy stuff no matter what, but guys like me, it just stops me from truly collecting. I would love a full avengers 1/4 scale display, as well as some LOTR and Star Wars. It would cost 10's of thousands of dollars to do that, for stuff that is getting less and less exclusive, cheaper made and more expensive. I will buy 2 pieces and that's it, and it will cost me over $1000 (hulk and superman). They shouldn't be costing any more than these recasts do, it's just capitalistic greed.

I'm not going to lie, 1000 is light as hell compared to what antique centerpieces or pedestals or statues cost. Just because it came from a Chinese production line doesn't make it cheap you know. A highly detailed, mixed media 30 inch statue for 600 is pretty light bro.

I agree with you about the less exclusive nature of the game but among my friends, extended friends, relatives, and anyone I personally will ever see? I'm the ONLY one who collects this and I get mad props, so it's not like I'm in a neighborhood where everyone has a hulk haha.

You can argue that the original is too expensive, but to say that they should not cost anymore than the cost of these recasts is misguided. For one, the original did cost just as much at the time they were sold, some even less! The prices you are comparing these recasts to are today's market value of collectors, not mfg. prices. Second, you are not accounting for licensing cost, artists that spent hundreds of hours creatively designing the pieces, marketing costs that get the pieces to be as popular as they are now, etc... Anyway, there's a market for everything and if you enjoy recasts, that's fine.

I definitely didn't say I like recasts, or implied it, I just miss out on pieces I would like because they are too much. And I really do think the legit pieces should be about the cost of the recasts, that is more than sufficient for licensing and artistic time. Remember, it is the crazy new prices that are driving the cost of the recasts. They are priced high enough to make some money, but not so high that people will just go for the legit piece. If SS pieces were 150-200, then recasts would be 50-100.

I'm just saying that if the statues were cheaper I would be more inclined to have a larger collection and feel much better about spending more than I am with prices being what they are now. It's not like I am saying $1000 is my limit, I'm just saying it is my limit for only 2 pieces.

@dragon

You can not compare a brand new open edition chinese factory made statue with an antique piece of art, that is ludicrous. Keep in mind, I'm not bashing used market price, that is driven by demand and we the buyers. It is the price for new pieces that I don't like, it is getting more and more and we are getting less and less. This business of announcing the edition size after the PO's have been filled, of delivering something a year or more late (batman) is not what you should expect from a reputable company. That being said, I did order superman still, so I'm as much of the problem as others.
