My art book, graphic novel and soundtrack are on the way! The box better roar when I open it
I see this film is now sitting at 90% on RT, I think that is a good indication that this film plays to a larger audience than just godzilla fans.
That site is terrible take everything with a grain of salt.
I've always liked rotten tomatoes, i've been looking at it for years now and the way movies get rated on there I feel is a pretty good representation of the quality of the film. But it's a nice sign considering alot of people see movies based on how critics rate them, and that will play into something like godzilla. It's stuff like IMDB that i don't like.
I believe it or not go to youtube a lot for reviews.
Emmerich..... what a ******
The problem it seems is that the build up to the final 15-20 minutes which has the full out monster warfare, sucks, more or less. The summary portion of a review done by CBM seems to be the general saying from most reviewers about the movie. He also mentions the cutaway teases for certain scenes.
"- and then the movie makes a critical mistake that it almost doesn't recover from: The focus is shifted from Cranston (as brilliant as you'd expect as the manic, complex Joe) and placed on Johnson (not so brilliant as the block of wood Ford). The Kick-Ass actor is okay, it's just that his character is pretty much a blank slate.
There are even a couple of scenes that cut away just as Godzilla and the MUTO are about to throw down, and these are sure to infuriate some. Personally I was fine with it because I knew (or at least hoped) it was all building to something special, and in that regard I was not disappointed.
The final 15-20 minutes are a Kaiju lover's dream come true. I wouldn't even consider myself a massive fan of these type of monster flicks, and I was in awe of the spectacle. The special effects, the creature fight choreography (if you will), the screeching, the atomic breath..all well worth the wait. It's just a shame that our human guide on the journey to get there wasn't more interesting.
Taking a giant monster movie as seriously this Godzilla reboot does is risky business, and to his credit Edwards does infuse the story with genuine emotion and character drama -- which works just fine while we care about those characters, but drags a bit when we don't. Still, this is a welcome return to the screen for the King Of Monsters and the incredible creature fight scenes are worth the price of admission alone -- just be aware of how long you'll have to wait to see them, and in who's company."
Spoiler free review:
Really enjoyed it. I wish I hadn't read some of the negative responses to pacing etc, as it made me more aware of it while watching it. I thought the VFX were a mixed bag. Some of it, especially towards the end was amazing. Cranston was good, I didn't like AJT but I knew I wouldn't before I got in there, so that's probably not a balanced review of his performance. I have to admit I did have a creeping feeling in the long stretches between creature feature stuff, that it was down to budget rather than an artistic choice. It just felt like there were loads of distractions and material wedged in to try and delay the the inevitable monster mash.
But listen it's generally of a pretty high quality throughout, this is a proper attempt at serious film making, and when it works its great. As with most things I feel that you will already be predispositioned to like or love this before you go into the theatre. I really liked it. Unlike something like Amazing Spiderman 2, I can't see people hating this, it's not that polarising. It's kind of an in between movie. My two peeves would be AJT and some of the VFX, mixed bag. It's like they saved all their cash for the creatures, which was the right thing to do. The music wasn't as strong as it could have been either, and I've been listening to the CD for a few days. And I'm gonna say this at the wrath of a lot of people, I didn't love Cranston either, his performance was fine (I love him), but he felt like he wasn't part of the movie to me, it didn't all gel together. That's just my opinion.
A solid, not stupid monster movie, with some killer sequences. Not your normal summer bollox. And some annoying TV acting, lets see if Whedon can get a decent performance out of AJT. I wasn't surprised by anything in the film, which was odd considering I have tried to avoid much of the pre-release press. That review posted above is spot on. It was a bit like watching The Incredible Hulk every evening as a kid, waiting and waiting for Bixby to lose his temper.
If your not a Godzilla fan: 6/10, if you love him you will wet yourself with excitement (I'm talking to you Maulfan) every time he appears: 8/10.
Bring on a bigger budgeted sequel with more of the King.
Saw it yesterday.
Things I didn´t liked
- Unnecesary drama
- Human dumb desitions over and over again
- Wanted to see more monter mash
Leaving those things aside.
It´s a cool movie, I´m not a fan, but I was waiting for this movie since they announced it.
I would say 7/10
don't worry Transformers 4 is coming soon
Thanks for the review, I feel like yours is quite helpful, you bring the pov of a fan of these sorts of films but you can speak to not being a Godzilla nut either and give both sides.
I would agree with you that budget probably did play a factor in the vfx, I say only but, it was made with only $160 million which seems low for as grand a scope as they seem to have gone for, and I'm sure certain parts were given more time and effort than others because of it.
So I flipped through the Art of Destruction last night, got home late so didn't really get a chance to read, but wow, what an amazing book and worth every penny, though seeing the jacket say $45 when I only paid $28 was a good feeling
I would love to see a similar book more about the vfx and that side of things too, but it's a great piece. To my surprise, the SDCC 2013 pieces were not depicted anywhere, so I wonder what the real story is with those maquettes. There is a section on the Encounter though, and I really didn't get much chance to read through so maybe they talk about them and just don't show them.
Like the new Godzilla design or not, just skimming through, it's very clear to me a lot of thought and consideration was put into every aspect of his look and as someone who's thrilled with the end result, I'm glad for it.
Interesting part I did catch, even though this Godzilla has pretty big legs, Gareth's comments on a very Heisei looking concept below was that he didn't like the thunder thighs, which I found funny
I'll try to get scans of some of the cooler images, like the one in my avatar, so much detail the scan online now doesn't capture.
