Re: Looking to buy a new TV...ned help!

At lease a 50inch and get a Panasonic 1080p plasma, the highest rated one on the market for over 5 years (even through Consumer Reports)

:lecture

Burn in should not be an issue with new plasmas, as I have said before in at least 4 similar threads, I have played non stop for as much as 10 hours with no permanent burn in.

Theres so many myths about plasmas, none of which I have seen to be true in my experience.

If the service plan wasn't profitable, they wouldn't sell it -- which means, on average, people pay more for the insurance than they use in repairs. My understanding is that these joints make more profit on the service plan that on the damn TV. Its always a bad idea. Insure for catastrophes, not repairs ... when the worst case scenario is buying another $1000 TV, insurance is overkill (particularly when the insurance costs almost 25% of the new value of the TV).

I know what youre saying but I disagree completely.

The way I see it and the way I buy things....I dont bother with insurance...for one i never need it, and secondly if i did have a 'catastrophe', by the time that happened it would be a good idea to upgrade to new technology anyway.

King speaketh the truth.

Yep decent Plasma no burn in but possibly the occasional image retention although i've never had it and dont really understand how you would get it these days on a quality tele. Also Plasma's generate some heat but nothing you'll really notice unless your watching with your head pretty much glued to the tele.

Expense is also a bit of a myth i have heard with someone calculating that you will spend 500 dollars more over a 25yr period compared to an LCD.With LCD still being more expensive there is really no difference.By the way LED is just a backlight LCD that they just market that way to catch out the uninformed consumer who thinks its some breakthrough new technology.

If your a punter just wanting a tele that does the job grab whatever looks good to your eye after browsing the web for independent sites who arent biased one way or the other. If your a videophile then Plasma seems to be the way to go with Pioneer Kuro still being the King.

You thought it was hard with all the info out there well unfortunately you'll probably be more confused looking at the various answers here.

Where's that Sticky.:banghead

:dunno

I tried to get the last 3 threads combined and sticky, but lazy MODS didnt listen :monkey4

Maybe after we get 5 or 6 more of these threads they will.

There has been a lot of useful information shared, but its spread over at least 5 threads. I give up :duh

I'm not seeing the "complete" disagreement. I said service plans are "always a bad idea" -- and you described why service plans are a bad idea for you personally. None of what you said was inconsistent with what I said ... and we came to the same conclusion (bad idea). I'm confused.

Though -- I have found a case where a service plan is a good idea. I have a friend that is installing a 32" flatscreen on his deck. If you're going to install the TV outside, go with the service plan ... otherwise, its a ripoff.

:lol I have to doubt whether the warranty would be valid if he brought in a rain soaked tv.

my 32" vizio in the bedroom works decently but I would probably have doubts about a larger screen from them especially one my primary viewing and movie wathcing. it is superduper barebones. the remote has no features and its a pain to adjust settings. theres no quick "fit to screen" options, I had to manually stretch the horizontal and vert dimensions on some HD channels.

Probably true. I think he's got a covered deck, though ... so rain isn't as much of a problem as heat and humidity (particularly here in Houston). Not sure its as easy to deny a warranty for that reason. He's a lawyer, so I'm sure he read the fine print.

My TV just died a few minutes ago. *click* screen went out and it won't turn back on...:banghead

looks like I have alot of reading to do.....:lol

or, maybe I'll start a new thread......:monkey3

I bought the tv and Ween be proud I cracked and got the protection. $60 a year isn't really bad. Thats less than 1 cable bill to cover myself.

This is the model I ended up getting.

Never thought I'd be influential about anything! :lol

Let me know what you think after you had it for awhile.

That stinks! How long have you had it?

You should definitely consider getting a Samsung LCD, the bigger the size the better the picture. I feel they're top of the line with picture quality. Look at the quality of my 720p 32" model, it only has a 8,000:1 contrast ratio and look at the colors, it's amazing!!!...

It was 17 years old..big MF too, I forgot how much it weighed until I moved it last night..:monkey4

right now I'm looking at...

Insignia 50"

Panasonic 50"

Samsung 50"

If anyone has any words of advise on these I'd really appreceate it. I'm also wondering if I realy need the USB port on the tv or not.

Ahhhhhh....an old big ass tube TV. I have one of those sitting in my family room that doesn't work half. You can watch DVDs on it, but you can't watch cable. As soon as I get a new TV, they're taking this one with them!
