MoS was fast-tracked because of the lawsuit with the creator's families. A court ruling two years ago declaired if WB did not pursue development of another Superman film they were willfully supressing the value of the character and could be found responsible for damages if the copyright were to fully revert.
So one way or another there was going to be a Superman film.

Man of Steel would not have happened without Nolan.

Umm... Actually, no. The creator of the story matters too. Nolan's not just producing. He helped come up with this story. He may not have written the script, but the story credit will end up going to him too. Jaws and Shawshank are both based on books. You're saying the author of the book doesn't matter despite them neither directing nor writing the script?
That said, Nolan's involvement is pretty minimal. If this is a success all around, the credit should go to Snyder, Goyer, Nolan, and everyone involved making it. If the movie sucks as a whole but the story premise is good, then the credit would go to Nolan and the blame to Snyder and Goyer.

Funny you use Spielberg as an example, because for Poltergeist his official title is producer, but is was the defacto co-director and his fingerprints are all over it in that department.

Writers have a fair amount of power in pre-production and their opinion holds a lot of weight in choosing the director.
During filming their power in mainly limited to what's on the page. "We want to change a line of dialogue" "No." If you ingore the writer you can get in trouble with the Writer's Guild.

I know that Dan O'Bannon had a lot of creative input during the pre-production and production phases of Alien, helping to determine what the final facehugger looked like among other things.
I think this stuff varies from movie to movie, but in some cases directors will have more autonomy than in others.

O'Bannon was a writer on a cancelled Dune project and knew most of the art guys over there. Scott used a lot of people from Dune.

I don't know if this is the case or not. My point is that Nova's argument doesn't always hold. But it would not surprise me if Nolan had a great deal of influence here beyond the script/story component because of his past success. If I were the bigwigs at the WB, I would put limits on the kinds of of creative control I gave to Snyder after what he did with Sucker Punch. And I would probably encourage Nolan's influence considering all the success he has had in projects he has spearheaded.
