A few reviewers *****ed about the action just won't stop it won't let the viewer breath for a minute.

I think the moan is that it's action without emotional context. Over and over, think transformers 2 & 3.

Re: The Man of Steel

If it's like the action in the Transformers movies, then I can totally understand the complaints. That **** just becomes visual white noise after a while.

Re: The Man of Steel

Superman is THE perfect hero in the publics eyes. So people expect so much out him. They literally want the superman of all superhero movies when it comes to him.

Re: The Man of Steel

This really worries me:

"Man of Steel can't even near the sheer entertainment of Tony Stark's rigged-weapon raid on the Mandarin's Miami compound."

WUT
That scene was amazing. Probably the best action scene in the entire Iron Man franchise.

:goodpost:

Action where it's just happening to the character(s) rather than them being really motivated is often poor

:exactly:

The final battle in IM3 was like that for me. So much going on and at night i couldn't differentiate which armour was which ect

That is a concern. I'd include Transformers 1 in that aswell - they were all the same.

A lot of this is going to fall on the writing and Cavill. If I don't particularly care about Superman the action is going to be uninteresting and unemotional.

The power of Reeve is that you liked him and therefore wanted to see him succeed. You winced when Zod & co appeared to be getting the better of him.

This film needs to produce the same reactions for Superman if the action is to be elevated above the mindless, overlong carnage of the Transformers films.

You want the hero to win when he gets beaten down you feel his pain and want him to pull through.

Like in Rocky, you really cared about the character and wanted him to win, and thats what made his victories so grand.

Alot of action these days is played for spectacle and forgets to make the fight about something

Re: The Man of Steel

So I saw it last night. I am seeing it again at midnight. Not because I can't wait to see it again, but I feel like I need to wrap my head around it.
I love so much of it!!!! I loved Krypton! Giant insect flying creatures! Basically all of Krypton and it's technology is so well thought out and other worldly that it demands your full attention. I love the flashback scenes. They are the most memorable part of the film for me. I am a softy when it comes to Clark's upbringing and him learning to control his powers as a young boy and talking with Ma Kent and Pa Kent are the strongest scenes in the film. But here is the thing: I felt absolutely numb by the action. If it were even 10 minutes shorter it would have been a stronger film. But right now as it stands with one viewing, I feel kinda numb by the experience. Once the battles start, it's cool for awhile, but seems to lack the soul that the beginning half of the film portrayed. Just a lot of CG destruction that never felt real to me.

I would also say the editing needed some work. Either that or the film restructured. Personally, I know most people are not fans of seeing his origin again, but I think the film would have played stronger if told in a linear fashion and not the flashbacks, with more time on his childhood. They did not feel as organically entwined as the flashbacks from Batman Begins. That film felt like the perfect balance of flashbacks helping the narrative. A couple of these felt clunky in the way they were presented in the context of the ongoing narrative. But the flashbacks are so strong that they are absolutely essential. I think a better way to do it would to just show what happens from the time he is a boy in Kansas to travelling the globe told in a linear fashion, but then people would have complained of "too much origin! Get to action!!!"

I will wait to give it a score until after my 2nd viewing. Right now I would say a 6 or 6.5 out of 10. I hope it goes up after tonight.

Re: The Man of Steel

Transformers had pointless over the top action AND wizzing robots AND robots with wrecking ball scrotums.

How can MoS compete?

Re: The Man of Steel

What was some of the last fights for you guys where there was a lot of emotion there?

Say what you will about ROTS but that fight had alot of emotion to it.
Logan vs Victor after he had just killed Kayla had alot of angst to it.
