When I first heard that Maul was tattooed, I hoped someone made a mistake. I loved the idea that he was born red and black, that it was inherent to his kind. To me, this made the character even more believable. Also, I've heard that if the tattoo's get over a certain percentage, you get serious health issues. If you're skin can't breath, you die. So, having a full body tattoo is not very believable.

I hate to tell you this but the health risks with getting tattoos are very minimal. Even if you have a full body of them. Many people do and I can gaurantee that none of them died from their skin not being able to breath. My arms can breath fine.

Not to mention that getting a tattoo doesn't close the pores in that area.

What I dig is when I read it was actually Sidious who tatooed Maul! Can you imagine Palpy standing over him with the needle? After reading that, I imagined that maybe Palpatine had tats as well. Maybe all Sith do. Maybe Palpy had tats that spiraled up his arms to focus his Sith Lightening into deadlier bolts.

That's a really cool idea actually! Would be interesting to see...

I would like to believe that Palpatine used the Dark Side to tatoo Maul. Focused Force lightning or some such technique.

what book is this from?? ive read both the darth maul books. Shadow Hunter and Sabateur. and i dont recall them mentioning it--- oh well i guess its another reason to read them again. they were so good. especially how you read about maul's purpose and belief that he "must" do what he is doing. i especially like his explanation to sidious why he chose the double bladed saber. great background info on such short lived character.

I think I read it in either the novelization or in one of those little one-shot "Journals" they did for several of the Ep I characters. The journal also mentioned a dueling session with "his master" where he actually "tasted his master's blood." Creepy.

I'm pretty sure that's not true. There are plenty of crazy folk out there with their whole bodies tattoed(I mean that in the most endearing sense), the healing process has nothing to do with 'breathing.' When a tattoo heals fully, it's just skin. Scarred skin, but still skin. Of course, this is assuming Maul was tattoed safely with the proper sterilization... if not, then I got nothing.
And either way, that would hurt like eight bee-yotches on a bee-yotch boat...

The most detailed info I would find on this subject was through the Wikipedia. And still, they kept to the idea that the double bladed lightsaber was two independent systems that powered the two blades, housed in one handle. Originally it was constructed by Exar Kun, but was later built by Maul from the information stored by Kun on a Sith Holocron.

Originally, these weapons were only used for training Sith and not for combat. The danger associated with such a weapon required finesse in handling a lightsaber that many Sith were unable to attain. Maul was one of the few to do this, even if you see it all over the place in KOTOR...lol. So I can imagine that he was pretty proud of his skill with this weapon and would not want to split it unless he had to...

They were built to used mainly as a staff weapon, not to be split in two. You could use the one blade if you wanted, with a slightly bigger handle, and if it was cut... you stood a good chance of still having one useable blade to fight with. But as far as two sabers that could be disconnected at will.... no.

Here is the link to Darth Maul on Wiki... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darth_Maul

Here is the link to lightsabers.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightsaber#Double_Bladed_Lightsabers_.2F_Saberstaffs

Besides, I don't see why you would want one that did this anyway. You still can use it as one or two depending on how you used it... so why disconnect them?

does anyone have a good link to a tutorial on how to make a lightsaber effect in photoshop?

What comes to my mind is to fight rapier & dagger style like Anakin does for, what, a half-second (?!?), in AOTC against Dooku or like in KOTOR.

Man (to get off topic a second) what bummed me out concering TPM and AOTC, and I loved them both (and defended them), was that the marketing of TPM spoiled that the lightsaber was in fact double and the marketing of AOTC led me to anticepate an extended fight where Ani fought with duel blades.

Went ahead and ordered a couple of the Darth Maul books to get some more background info on this guy. I really love Maul.

Hey Josh- will you be getting the PF Maul?

I'm just not really sure of your interest in the character.

If you like Maul you'll love this...my Custom Maul...

Arrogance personified!

And from the side...
This guy has a Product Enterprises body, a SS head(from David St. Hubbins!), Hasblo costume, Dragon gloves and boots from who-knows-where( found 'em in the spares bin at SBP). The St. Hubbins head works great sans hair; gotta love that rock star scowl! The horns are Magic Sculpt: the paint is custom(air brush and hand work). Don't bug for more pix; these are all I have for the moment...PS

That custom is sweet. I'd actually like to have that.
