I've been playing MGS2 lately trying to do that god damned Snake Sniping VR mission.

There's got to be a trick to it, or some sort of pattern I'm missing because I've put some hours Into the and I've got kinda close once.

I think I'm going to replay MGS 3 HD to get the bad taste of GZ out of my mouth. I just can't understand how the series can logically flow from a fun-loving comic book type of storyline in MGS 3 to the gritty tone of Ground Zeroes. In fact, GZ is just blatantly confused and "disconnected" from the MGS 3 canon - even more so than Peace Walker.

OMG! Same here! I've gotten 100% on the MGS2 VR missions twice, once on the PS2 and the other on my original PSN account and since I got a new US account, I'll have tp re-earn all my plats. I was playing that damn MGS2 Snake Variety Level 4 sniping missions for days now, it involves a lot of memorization and luck, and like I said at the earlier pages of this thread, ALWAYS giive yourself a break when you're about to rage, or quit every 20 failed retries.

The trick to Variety Level 4 is that sentries will start to approach Meryl around the 2 minute mark, so stop what you're doing, get down the lower level by hanging and pray your sniping skills are good enough to take out 2 or 3 enemies at once.

I doubt kids these days would even play MGS3, let alone 1 and 2. The popular notion is that to read a Wiki sumary or watch a Lets Play. Heck, some "hardcore" MGS fans never even played the MSX originals. For shame.

i will go on to say MGS ground zeroes is better then MGS2 lol

Holy **** :lol that's a hellva statement, PW couldn't feel anymore outside the canon than it did.

Better than only the Big Shell, not the Tanker mission :lecture

I'll quite happily admit I was wrong about Ground Zeroes and the gritty "fresh" theme is appealing to me.
Very much so toward a splinter cell type game but enjoyable.
Ha!

That's just the thing, though - MGS is not supposed to play like Splinter Cell or any other stealth game :lol. I have great appreciation for MGS 3 because it did a remarkable job of representing a Cold War storyline, and giving the sense that it was a more "primitive" time in modern warfare where Big Boss had to rely on crude equipment to do battle with. In addition to a "stamina" and life gauge that's far more realistic than regenerative health. To an extent, the same thing was carried over in Peace Walker, despite all of the nonsense with advanced AIs and what-not.

But, then, along comes Ground Zeroes (which takes place just a few weeks after the end of PW) and Big Boss suddenly has a holographic pager that's more technologically advanced than any smartphone of the mid-2000s. There's even an iPhone app for it :lol.

I have to say, that the overall tone of GZ in regards to being gritty, dark, and without any semblance of humor just doesn't feel right in the MGS universe. To me, it gives the impression that it was made by a third-party developer instead of KojiPro. Instead of a "fresh take" on the series, I'd rather a game that stays true to the tone of the series. There's no need to "fix" something if it's not broke.

That said, the only changes I've ever wanted were for Kojima to calm it down on the Japanese humor, and for him to get rid of the advanced-tech nonsense that shouldn't exist in the 70s and 80s. However, he just, flat-out removed the series humor all together, and seems to be going even more ballz out with the nonsense tech.

I feel like Kojima pulled a joke on me with this game :lol :slap.

But, don't get me wrong, I love the gameplay of GZ, and although it's not truly faithful to MGS in it's implementation (eg. no ration, no cardboard boxes, regenerative health, etc), it's probably the most well-developed Sandbox game I've ever played. It's a shame it didn't come with a bigger map to explore.

I can still appreciate a good game, even if it's not a good MGS game.

Yeah it's a well executed demo.
It also lacked a boss battle.

To be honest I never really look too much into Metal Gear Solid games, I just try to get the most out of them all without replaying them over and over.
Ground Zeroes is the first to make me want to 100% any game/demo.
I enjoy them all in their own unique way. Love the Lore.

I managed to do the sniper level this weekend. thank science!

Took an hour and 15 of retrying

I've played almost all SC games, GZ doesn't feel remotely like any of them.

Tone-wise may be more intense, but it definitely has a strong MGS feel, the gameplay elements are there for the most part, the important ones at least (except for wall knocking) the shallow ones are not, but they may return.

PW tone may be blown out of proportions from MGS3, but I still feel it's strongly connected, and GZ may feel a bit more disconnected from MGS3, because it's directly connected to PW, not MGS3, it's like saying MGS1 and MGS4 feel disconnected, well, they certainly do if you ignore MGS1 and MGS4 are tied to MGS2 and not to each other :lol

Also, there's a bit of humor in GZ, not even close to the amount of previous games, it's more subtle, for instance, if you have a mag in you hand and get discovered, while on reflex mode, you can throw the mag into the guard's head and as it hits him, it will sound like a little boxing bell ring and you will KO the guard, :lol it's pretty funny.

Well, even if you disregard MGS 2's plot, I'd say that MGS 1 and 4 actually had a strong semblance that it was a continuation from the same canon. The only difference in MGS 4, was that Snake got older and Liquid dwelled as a persona within Ocelot's mind. But, all of the characters from MGS 1 were still there (with the exception of Nastasha).

In comparison, MGS GZ feels quite alien to the MGS 3 canon, in my opinion.

Ooooh I get what you mean now, sort of like a new cast in an ongoing show, yeah, in that regard it definitely feels that way, I still feel it's in canon IMO, just a couple of new faces.

Congrats! That's pretty much the hardest thing for the achievements, everything else is pretty much manageable from here on out. The MGS1 Snake hold up missions are a pain on PS3 but much easier on 360 and Vita due to the lack of pressure sensitive controls. Extreme mode wasn't a big deal for me either, except the Harrier perhaps.

Seeing you beating that sniper mission makes me wanna give it yet another try, I kinda gave up since I already got the plat for every MGS game but after GZ I kinda have a renewed enthusiasm. Definitely gonna plat MGS2 (again) no matter what! :yess:
