I think this is because their main target are kids. So they made the story very simple, almost all action and no heavy drama (thats why they cast Fox, no acting required). And I think their mission's accomplished.. kids love this movie!

yes, kids love it, as they should since this is mainly aimed at them. you're right about that. however, there is a way to do simple stories that appeal to kids while not alienating the adults. pixar does that really well. tmnt's plot n characterization was just poorly conceived and written.

to me, the movie got by on the charm of the turtles.

Still hatevl Knoxville as Leo. Of all the voice cast, he was the worst. Even more so than monk as splinter. Did they ever state why they replaced the mocap actors voice? I was watching an interview with him and he sounded a million times more Leonardo than Knoxville.

Watched this film today. I thought it was actually quite good. The turtles came across quite good onscreen.
Not as bad as I thought. Was well surprised.

i was going to write a review but this sums it up nicely

True.
Compared to Pixar, this movie's plot and characterization are indeed poor.
The only thing they rely to connect to the adults are the things that Mikey said (mostly his jokes are nerdy jokes, that I don't think kids will understand) and those nods to the comic world counterparts (like the Usagi Yojimbo reference).
Other than that, it's action-no drama-action-comedy-talking turtles-smashing cars stuffs that all kids will enjoy.

everyone keeps complaining about the stuff that doesn't matter. The FACES.

the Faces are hideous...I have defended this movie but the faces are too ugly, they are horrible. they looked like if the original turtles were burnt in a fire or something.

did the original movies have good acting? no, did they have great plots? NO! the reason they are great is because of the turtles. These turtles look like this

Just got back from watching this last night and before I give my opinion let me give you a bit of my TMNT history.

Back before the first movie one of my best friends was into the original comics. I read them and found them enjoyable... But I don't remember much about them. I was 18 at the time.

The original movie came out and I enjoyed it.

I never have seen a single cartoon episode.... They look awful.

TMNT part two is garbage.

Never watched part 3.

Thought the fully CGI movie was pretty good. Not perfect but seemed to have the tone of the comics down better... But I only saw it once and I don't really remember the comics.

The Original TMNT film has not aged well for me.

So that being said I am by no means a TMNT super fan. I like the idea and the look. I was a bit worried about this film and how Hulked out they looked. After seeing them in trailers and photos I got use to them. Reading the reviews and what people were saying set my expectations to "Transformers" level and took my wife and kids (they wanted to see it)

All in all I thought it was good. Not great. I thought they did a nice job with the Turtles characters. I laughed a few times at the jokes (Breaking out of the glass cage just to want to clean something after the adrenalin shot :) ) I liked that not all the turtles were Hulked out and they were pretty easy to identify beyond their color bandanas and weapons. I though the action sequence on the mountain was a blast and had some things that I never seen before and made me smile (that does not happen often anymore) The CG was great and the pacing was OK. My kids loved it and my wife was pleasantly surprised. All in all a good night with the family.

Having said that I had some issues. I thought the pace of the film was uneven. I blame that on the flat human characters. Anytime they showed up and the story moved away from the turtles I deflated a little bit. There was so much fun energy with the turtles that the boring human characters were just that much more boring.

And what really bugged me was the lack of the TMNT kicking some foot clan a$$. There was not much martial arts. No fighting. The turtles barley used their weapons. I think this has to do with making it kid friendly but it was really lacking. I would have been satisfied had the turtles, when looking for an elevator and stumble on the foot clan, had a great fight scene during that time instead of running away. The film really lacked in that department IMO... But it was still fun and I personally don't get the hate. 3 out of 5 for me.

What I find funny and I mean no disrespect to the TMNT fans.... Is what do you guys expect?? The Series was turned into a children's franchise long ago when they made part two and made it into a cartoon show and a toy property for... KIDS.

If you are pure fan of the original comics then yeah.... I get it... But this has become a kids franchise. This movie does nothing to hurt that TMNT label.

I always laugh when fans of TMNT, Transformers, and GI Joe act like they are owned some sort of Shakespearian type of story for their movies based on..... TOYS. IMO you got more then these things ever deserved and you got much better quality then anyone should have hoped for. I mean... TOYS and Cartoons...

Having said that I am not saying they can't make nor should they not try and make the best films they can. But I get a kick out of people that complain about the lack of quality for their childhood cartoon series and toys. Personally I was not shocked by the badness that was Masters of the Universe.... I was more shocked they made a movie of the cartoon series I liked watching after school as a young pre teen.

I guess the argument that these films deserve the same quality and respect that comic books do since many comics became just for kids and had kids cartoons. However the comics themselves pointed the way to were the films and animated movies were going to go. Had the comics stayed lighter in tone we would have gotten a much different Batman and Avengers films. But comics got series again... I don't think TMNT ever managed that. I think the majority of the public think of Kids toys when they think of TMNT... Same goes for Transformers and GI Joe.

But if you come at this purely as a fan of the original Comic and it's tone then I get it... And you should probably hate anything and everything that the TMNT license has become.

You're trying to reason with a forum of adult men who can't simply let go of their childhood. In fact, they spend hundreds of dollars trying to buy it back. Lol Dads with bigger toy rooms then their kids. :) They are the biggest "so and so raped my childhood" offenders. :rotfl

regarding the faces, when i first saw the official still pics i too hated the "new" look of the turtles like most of you guys. although they still don't look so great in motion in the actual film, i didn't find them such a problem once i started getting absorbed in their characters and their antics. so in a weird way their ugliness became a little endearing, in the same way the hunchback of notre dam or the elephant man were. which isn't to say the turtles' characters were deeply fleshed out, but to me it was amusing/interesting enough on a superficial level for me to like the turtles themselves.

So I am watching the original film last night and I can honestly say that it is just as goofy... If not Goofier then then new one. The only reason people think of the original as "dark" is because of it's limited budget. The story, acting, and cheesy jokes are pretty bad... It's still fun and a good nostalgia ride but nowhere near the classic some seem to make it out to be, IMO of course... I am going to finish it tonight and then watch the animated movie... I am starting to think that that might be the best turtles movie made so far.

No.... People say it is dark because the second and the third one are so stupid in comparison

I actually was reading on this before and people said the first one was dark only because the turtles used their weapons to fight. That was what was considered so dark and evil about the movie.

Also because Casey Looked like Jason Voorhees a lot of parents freaked the hell out because of him. (Thats why there is no Casey on the sequel)

Well, visually the 1990 film is literally darker than the new film :lol Most of the film takes place at night and everything looks dirty, used and real, unlike the new film. I also think Shredder looked better and he had an awesome intro in the film too. Much better than the 2014, imo.

Even their 1990 weapons looked used and "dark." In the new film their weapons look shiny and new. Also, there's a sense of realism missing in the new films, maybe it's because of the CGI, so it doesn't feel or look as real. The sewers and the city in the original film looked really dark, dirty and real. Maybe that's why it feels darker, because everything looked real.

He learned from watching his owner

Ummmm... But if we are talking about people complaining about the new film and not the old it has to be pointed out that He was just a rat at the time... Not Ooze infested Rat... Just a rat... I believe a Genetically engineered rat learning kung Fu from a book is more "believable" then a everyday Rat learning it from watching his master.

LOL I can't believe I just wrote that :)
