Sideshow Collectibles can kiss their *** good-bye if they loose exclusivity of distribution in NA.

Sideshow holds far more power in this market than Hot Toys, including licenses that Hot Toys needs to produce a number of lines. This relationship would never be jeopardized.

Also, TRU in Taiwan probably has nothing to do with TRU in the US - the name is more than likely used under license. A very quick hit shows that TRU Taiwan is owned and operated by Fung Group, a Hong Kong-based corporation. The Fung Group is one of the largest sourcing firms (Venture vultures) in the world. The US sources many industrials with them. Huge in apparel. They have like $15 Billlion in revenues and own distribution globally. They could swat sideshow away like a gnat if they wanted to. They own all Toys-r-us distribution in Asia. This could be bigger news than first glance. We will see.

To be honest, as popular as Hot Toys has become in recent years with the publicity and marketing they are enjoying, I am very surprised a large VC competitor/Suitor has not shown up. Obviously there is money to be made in the $200 dollie space. Perhaps this is the first contestant in the ring.

These local franchises of TRU offers a lot more local/regional toys. The TRU in HK, TW, SG, KOR & JPN offers anime models (Gundam, Marcorss and others), chogokins, Zoids and yes, even Tomicars. So I am not surprised if they carry Hot Toys even for small quantities.

Just don't expect them to try the same thiing in North America. NA TRU did try carrying Gundam models in the late 90s but they eventually disappear in a few years.

Didn't consider the licensing issue, thanks for pointing this out. However one must consider that as a private company, SS is open to attack from outside influencers/competition, as opposed to inside takeovers etc. A large Asian Company could, if motivated, get the various license rights if the the money is there. (Fung has $/capital/access to stores, distribution in a huge market, and if motivated could cause problems with SS--if they could secure distribution rights in NA--not likely but never say never.)

On a personal note, I much rather support a small mom & pop shop than TRU on any given day.

It would be interesting to find out what percentage of Sideshow's total sales are HT products. At least 50%?

Fung has $/capital/access to stores, distribution in a huge market,

But this is true of dozens of companies. And Hot Toys is a fraction of what Sideshow sells/distributes. As a private company, Sideshow is open to competition only as much as any other company, public or private.

As far as buying out "toy" companies, Hot Toys would be pretty small fry for a company as large and diversified as Fung to consider. Even more far fetched would be converting the company over to mass-production and eliminating the Sideshow relationship. That's really just pissing away all the value the brand has. I just don't see it. For these guys, it makes a lot more sense to concentrate on existing mass-market high volume products. In so much as any toy is high volume compared to things like apparel and electronics.
