Not convinced whatsoever that those are not renders.
Assuming that would be an actual backdrop with perfect gradation from grey to white, the boots would therefore have to be physically rotated in front of it to accommodate the various angles we see here. That would induce the slightest bit of lighting/shadow change at the best of studio lighting setups however, the shadows, light direction, and falloff appear to be static in every position while the boots are rotated.
This leads me to believe it is something similar to a Z-brush or Mudbox setup with the viewpoint being rotated which keeps the gradient background static and does not alter the lighting, just the vantage point while work is done on the model/textures.
Even with the hands, the lighting source appears to be almost directly overhead - exactly where the camera is taking the picture. Again, even in a perfect studio situation, I would expect some sort of lighting change or shadow play from the camera if nothing else.
I could be wrong... real life is stranger than fiction as they say but these are not convincing me of anything in physical form.
