it was definitely good, but not great. it has some of the same social commentary as District 9, but not as complex and more specifically relevant to US/Mexico. other than that, it's a good piece of modern character-driven scifi. and despite the relatively tiny budget, the effects are good, but probably because they're well hidden. it has the same basic approach Phil Tippett had in Cloverfield where most of the action takes place at night.
Loved it. Solid 8/10 for me and I will definitely buy the Blu-ray when its available. For a movie that cost about $15,000, it put most multi-million dollar genre films to shame. Great story, great acting and just a gem to watch. I will tell you this--don't expect a lot of creature action. That is few and far between but when they are on screen it is very, very cool. Not a thriller or a horror film. More a straight up science fiction piece. Reminded me of Cloverfield crossed with 50s' sci-fi. Now because I'm greedy, I hope the director and his crew get some more money and can go back and make another film set in this world. Not a remake but a true sequel that expands the story and what is going on in it. That is the greatest accolade you can give to a film like this--you WANT MORE!
I saw it. I had read some enthusiastic reviews a while ago but IMO it's really nothing special, aside from what they achieved with a small budget.
The effects that they produced (not just the monsters, but inserting occasional tanks and things digitally) for apparently very little money are cool. If your buddy made this movie you'd be really impressed.
The story is fairly uneventful, the acting is uneven, and the actors themselves are not very likable. Also the monster design, IMO, is not very creative.
They look like
giant squid or octopi that are walking on their tentacles.
