I purchase an item over X-mas, but never received anything. So, I went the PayPal dispute route and yesterday, I received a message that the claim was decided in my favor and that the money would be credited back to my account. Checked my account last night and the credit was there. Well, when I went online this morning, I received the following e-mail:

After further review, in response to your non-receipt complaint, the
seller
has provided reasonable proof the merchandise has been shipped to you.
Please return the refund that was given by using the send money option
in
your PayPal account. You will have 3 days to process this refund, or
further action will be taken.

Sincerely,

Now, it's got all the info on top of this regarding the claim (I omitted for security), but this still makes no sense. Why would I have to refund the money using the send option? PayPal has complete control over my account and I haven't used the money yet. They could simply transfer it electronically back if that was there decision. I also have never heard of them reversing something after a decision is handed out. When I look at the "sender" section in my Yahoo.com e-mail viewer, the section is blank. However, if I click on reply to sender, it lists [email protected]. Do you all think this is legit?

I don't know man. I would try to call them if you can. I disputed an item and won before but it never was reversed. I would ask them to maybe share this so called proof. I would ask for this anyways even if it is legit. You have a right to know.

Have you logged into your Paypal account to see if there's any information there?

I looked at your message again and the Send Money option seems really weird. I would think they'd have another way to get the money back without you having to do that.

call them up and find out. seems to me if they wanted the money back, they'd pull it from your pp or bank account.

I just logged on to my PayPal account and there is no mention of it anywhere. Even the dispute link on the main page is gone. I will probably call tomorrow, but I hate having to deal with their customer service ... on hold forever and they tend to know nothing (or at least that's what they tell you).

Also, I remember earlier in the year when someone disputed a sale from me, they took the money away - then listed it as on hold. Why can't they do that now? This seems shady.

Yes I would definitely try to contact Paypal directly, either by phone or by mail (just check the email addy of their customer support when you logged in. This is very suspicious. :emperor

Doesnt sound right.. If they decided that they would just take it from you anyway...

But paypal can be pretty F'd up at times.. I try not to use them anymore..

I forwarded this e-mail to the spoof address listed below. If it is real, that is the most nonbusiness-like thing I have ever seen. They don't even specify who I should "Send Money" to ... the seller, PayPal, the Pope, ... who knows:monkey4

Take the money out of the paypal and don't do anything for a while. If you receive the item, then resend the money, if not, don't send it.

You could always send it to me!! :D

This is not real- it sounds like a spoof email. If paypal wanted to do something they wouldn't leave it up to you, they would just do it.

And the weird thing is ... if it is a spoof, that would mean it has to be the seller. Otherwise, how would they know the information? Well, I am just going to wait til I hear something from PayPal.

If there is an option in your e-mail browser to read long-headers, turn that on and you should be able to figure out where it really came from.

The more serious thing here is, was there an option to click on the e-mail to be taken to paypal? Be careful that you don't ever click on an e-mail to log-in to a site. If you have to log-in to a site, type in the URL yourself. If you don't, you could be setting yourself up for a major headache.

This is interesting. There have been issues with buyers abusing their protection policy by claiming to never have received the item, filing for a refund and then receiving the refund through Paypal, thereby getting the item for free. And sellers have no way of disputing it. It could be that if this is from the seller, he/she may think you are abusing this policy. However, I have not read anything to the effect that buyers are being asked to send back their refund.

Whether this is from the seller or someone else, this sounds like a scam.

I think paypal added the security option that the address bar turns green if it's a legit site. At least it does for me. Do you see that in the address bar, is it shaded light green?

My wife and I went through something similar to this. Someone got her credit card number and ordered two lap tops from an online store. Fortunately we had proof it wasn't us since we were in the air to Florida at the time. The CC company refused to pay and the store claimed to have proof of delivery so we asked who signed for it.
If the seller is concerned they should put the signature requirement on the package but I definitely wouldn't be sending any cash back.

I haven't heard of that. Maybe it is a feature of the particular browser you are using?
