To make a long story short, I'm upgrading my phone through Verizon Wireless, and I want some opinions on which phone you would upgrade to: the Blackberry Storm or the Samsung Omnia. I'm going to the Verizon Store Saturday, so chime in with your thoughts now!

Both phones look like they can "hold their own," but I would like if some of you could weigh in with "pros and cons" of both, so I know exactly what I'm getting into. I've been looking at the Verizon website and comparing stats, but honestly, I don't fully understand a lot of what I'm reading. If you own either one of these, please post comments.

If there's another Verizon phone that you feel is comparable or more superior (but similar in price,) please post those options as well.

Thanks! I greatly appreciate it!!! :rock

(And of course, there's a poll! :joy)

I don't have either, but a bunch of my friends with Blackberrys who switched to iPhones are now switching back to Blackberrys. I guess the iPhone is cool for entertainment value - all those apps! - but the Blackberry is more useful or something? I don't know anything about the Omnia.

don't know about that one. my iphone does just as many useful things as my friend's blackberry.

So for I'm leaning towards the Omnia. The Storm doesn't even have Wi-Fi capabilities, which is a BIG negative in my book.

Apparently, the Omnia has won A LOT of reviewers over. :rock

I own a Blackberry Storm, and I'll be honest it's not a great smartphone but merely decent. It can be slow, sluggish, and prone to lockups. The lack of wi-fi doesn't really bother me as the xev connection Verizon provides is fast enough for my browsing purposes (which I don't do a whole lot on the go). Of course people who usually buy Blackberry phones do so for the incredible functionality and email capabilities and that is why I bought the Storm.

On April 1st Blackberry will launch an App store that'll provide service similar (in function but maybe not breadth) as the iPhone App store. A patch that should address some performance issues and general slowness is reported to be released soon after.

Sorry I don't know much about the Samsung Omnia. I've only seen it and aesthetically speaking I like the Storm design more.

Thanks for the info. I'm a college student, so when I heard that the Omnia had Wi-Fi, this was a perfect way for me to bypass an additional $30.00 a month on my bill for the internet service with Verizon.

But I definitely see your point. I will admit that the Storm definitely has a more unique look to it. And the "click" screen is a neat idea as well. I'm not set in stone yet, so I need more opinions like yours. Thanks again! :rock

Also, you mentioned about the slowness and I've heard that a lot of people complain about the "lag." Do you think that a software update could fix this?

I know this is asking a lot but I'm hoping a Tech. Guru here can go to Verizon Wireless' cell phone webpage, go thru all of the specs/details of a Storm and Omnia, and tell me where each one excels and fails. (I don't even know what I'm reading half of the time. :lol)

Can anyone spare some time? :monkey2 :monkey3

I'm no cell phone tech guru so I can't really compare some of the heavier tech stuff, but I did search around and found some opinions and comparisons of the phones and generally the consensus was that the Omnia was a better choice.

A discussion of both phones over at the blackberry forums:

Note: The Storm comes with an 8gb microSD card pre-installed.

Honestly, I'd suggest you go to your nearest phone carrier store (like the Verizon store) and spend some time with both phones before making a decision.

EDIT: The clickscreen on the Storm is cool, but hardly necessary imo. The downside to it is that to facilitate the clickscreen, there is a noticeable gap between the screen and the rest of the phone chassis, meaning it'll be harder to clean the dust from the edges of the screen.

Plasmid, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT COMPARISON PIC AND LINK! :rock :rock :rock

So in terms of the 8gb micro SD card being "preinstalled:" The card something that is removable right? So the difference here is that the 8gb card comes with the Storm and as for the Omnia, you have to buy one? Is that correct?

Yes. The difference between the Storm and Omnia (in regards to memory) is that the 8gb card can be removed from the Storm but the Omnia's memory (your choice of 8gb or 16gb) is internal and cannot be removed (kinda like the iPhone).

The Storm includes an internal 1gb, so add that with the 8gb microsd and you're sitting on 9gb.

So with the Storm you could potentially upgrade the 8gb card to whatever you want because its removable?

Also, I'm still learning this whole Wi-Fi thing. To be Wi-Fi compatible, you need the physical hardware in the phone right??? So there's no way to upgrade a Storm to Wi-Fi capabilities or is there?

Yes, the Storm's memory is upgradeable. But then so is the Omnia's. with the Omnia you can choose between 8gb or 16gb internal, but you can also install a MicroSDHC card. In the end the Omnia (depending on your choice) has the potential to have more memory than the Storm possibly can.

In regards to wi-fi I'm pretty sure that it's a feature that is hardware dependent, so if you want wi-fi in a Blackberry Storm you'll just have to wait for the next model of the phone to be released. I'm not 100% positively sure on that so take my comment with a grain of salt.

Ouch there's no really no best deal here.... The only thing I can say is that we got my fiance a IPhone and I'm not a Apple fan AT ALL but I do like it because of the apps and you can program ur own apps, not that is used for the regular consumer but it's great for me.

I have a Samsung Instinct and the only reason is because I'm with Sprint, I will probably be using a different carrier come a year from now.

Bad problem about Omnia and Storm and my Instinct included that the touch screen is touch sensitive so it actually has to be hit in order to carry out the function to whatever you want to use on the phone. The problem that this holds is that within time the screens will wear out, anybody remember palm :lol?

IPhone has the heat/warmth sensitivity so it doesn't actually need to pressed just slight touch. Only thing I don't about the IPhone that I don't like is that Images cannot be sent SMS or via Text, it has to be e-mailed which is lame but if u don't images or don't get sent images on ur phone that often I don't see why one would care.

Memory I would go with something that can be expanded or is at least 16 gigs, but very rarely are u gonna use all 16 gigs unless ur putting full length movies or tons of mp3's on the phone which IMO shouldn't be used for that anyways... Get a real mp3 player that plays video that 100gigs if you play that way...

Most phone out there are hardware wifi dependent, some have a wifi adapter but why would u want to hook something else up to ur to make in more clutter, always stick with a phone that has the wifi capability built it, then no worries and u can transfer data to other phones, friends phones, pc's, etc...

So the Storm has no slot for a microSDHC memory card?

Well here's the thing is that everything at school is basically on Wi-Fi, so if I can prevent paying $30 a month for internet on the phone I will. Is this fool proof though??

And the iPhone is out for me because I'm sold on Verizon. There service in my area is impeccable.

Nope, the Storm does not have a microSDHC slot. Unless you're a memory fiend I don't think the difference between standard microSD and microSDHC is a big deal. (MicroSDHC is a newer format that supports higher memory capacities than the older MicroSD cards).
