Blackberry Storm Vs. Samsung Omnia

But here's what's bothering me. Honestly, the MAIN reason I want the Omnia is because of Wi-Fi. According to the Verizon Store I went to the other day, I can buy an Omnia WITHOUT having to purchase an unlimited internet plan for $30 additional a month. So if I ever did use the internet on the phone, they would charge me a per minute rate plus the amount of data transferred. So essentially if I'm on campus all day, I can just use their Wi-Fi connection for free and not even have to pay for the internet usage.

The Storm doesn't have Wi-Fi capability so I'm forced to buy the unlimited internet plan if I want to use the internet at all.

Also, can you create MS Word documents on the Storm?? I heard you could only edit them and even then (like you said) you have to download the apps. And would then "clog" up the phone with a bunch of programs etc. etc.? Are the apps. free to download or do they charge you per program?

Really? I was fairly sure that after November, 2008, all smartphones sold through Verizon would require a per month data plan, regardless of wi-fi usage. If that isn't the case (and you asked your Verizon store, so I guess you'd know for sure), then that's a dealbreaker for you in the direction of the Omnia.

To answer your second question, the BlackBerry Storm comes preloaded with the "DataViz Documents to Go Standard" suite for editing Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files from the handset. For mobile workers, this capability has become a must. You can create new documents, but you'll have to upgrade to the premium version of "Documents to Go". I'm not sure if Omnia is capable of that but I know the iPhone isn't, so +1 to blackberry I guess lol. Heck, you still can't cut/cop/paste on iPhone, which is something the Storm can right out of the box (thank the heavens).

I'm definitely going to double check this "Wi-Fi" business when I go back to the store on Saturday, but I'm just about 99.9%. And I think why that is the way it is because my GF has a Blackberry (not a Storm) and she pays for the Internet package per month and I'm joining with her account, so I am on a data plan technically, but interestingly enough, I would ALSO have to purchase an unlimited internet plan for $30 a month (if I want internet.) So WE BOTH have to pay $30 a month if WE BOTH want internet, which I think is absolutely ridiculous, but that's how it works. I thought it would be a one flat fee per account.

Also, with your Storm, do you notice any "lag" or hesitatation, especially with the accelerator (?) program. I heard this was a big issue with the Storm.

And do you pay PER program that you buy in the Blackberry Apps. Store or are the apps. you download free to all Blackberry account holders?

Yes, there is occasional lag when I tilt my Storm and it has to reorient itself from vertical to horizontal. However, there is no lag when the accelerometer is used in an application. I've tried playing a Marble Madness type of game on my Storm and there is no lag when I was tilting the phone in various directions.

As with all smartphones, the Storm performs slower if you have a lot of Apps open or loaded into your home screen, otherwise it performs just fine.

That I do not know yet. Common knowledge is that they'll probably try to get every penny out of you. That's my guess.

I've just heard of a lot of users (from online sites) complain about the "lag," so I wasn't sure it was really noticeable. Some people were making it sound like it was so bad, they actually returned the phone.

That's what I assumed too, but wasn't sure.

It's usually because they have so many applications open that it sucks up the allocated application memory, making the phone slow to a crawl. When that happens, even trying to dial a phone number can be difficult and sluggish.

Plasmid, you've helped me out A LOT! :rock :rock :rock

I can't thank you enough. I really do appreciate it. Stay tuned though, in case I have more questions. Thanks again! :chew

Here's another question:

Since the Storm is not capable of Wi-Fi, can you somehow "convert" it to be Wi-Fi capable???

No problem dude, glad to help.

Here's another question:

Since the Storm is not capable of Wi-Fi, can you somehow "convert" it to be Wi-Fi capable???

That will not be possible because the Storm does not have any WLAN capabilities or a WLAN Port, which is required to access a wireless network. I find the lack of WLAN on the Storm strange considering every other current Blackberry phone has it. The Storm is supposed to be Blackberry's flagship phone and it doesn't support wi-fi and won't be able to be converted because it lacks WLAN support. For more info on this just go on the Blackberry phones space on the Verizon website and compare the specs on the Storm with the Blackberry Bold.

A little more than 24 hours left until I make my way to the Verizon Store!!!

I want to see more opinions and poll votes!

For those of you who have the Storm (or not,) can you silence the click function on the Storm??

By that do you mean sounds made from clicking the screen? Well, my Storm doesn't make any sounds when I click around, so, yes.

Yep. When I went into the Verizon store, the clicking noise was cool and all, but was noticeable and if I want to text in class.......:lol.......Well, then I've got to be able to silence that option (but I do like knowing it's there.)

Just an update:

I purchased the Blackberry Storm and WOW, what a phone. To say I'm impressed is an understatement. Thanks for the advice to everyone who replied. :rock

Congrats Bro :joy. Im actually do for an upgrade myself. Hey did you get a free Blackberry Curver with your Storm? I know there was a promotion going on but Im not sure if it ended.
Anyhow I was thinking of getting the storm as well. I do have the curve now and I really like it. I was talking to one of the verizon people in kiosks in the mall and the guy told me that new blackberries are supposed to come out some time this month or next. I figure I'll wait till then if nothing good then I'll get the storm :banana

Thanks man! I LOVE this phone! Absolute amazing AND probably the easiest phone I've ever used, seeing how all that it's capable of.

I actually downloads Appworld onto it last night and downloaded Slacker radio for my first app. AWESOME! :rock ANY SONG you want, they have it! ANY!!!!! :rock I searched for a few songs that not even iTunes or a number of mp3 sites had, yet Slacker did. :rock :rock :rock The Storm rocks!

A friend of mine was trying to get me to download an app called "Shazam." Does anyone know what exactly "Shazam" is??? He's doesn't know either, other than it's been getting a lot of buzz.
