Kind of looks like a prototype of Briareos Hecatonchires from the Appleseed movies.

Trailer is out. Love the look of it...

Not bad, but I'm interested in this movie only because Chappie reminds me of Briareos :lol

And it seems Neill actually took the idea of the rabbit ears from Appleseed:

This is almost certainly the "ridiculous robot character" Blomkamp talked about in that earlier interview - and we know the version we'll see in Chappie will retain one of his distinctive features: those twitching rabbit antennae.
"You'll see some more Briareos ears," Blomkamp revealed

I hope Chappie is as badass as Briareos

From some details it seems that its taking place in the same universe as D9.
Would be cool if they aknowledged it not just saying they are easter eggs.

I've seen two reviews, one was positive, the other was mixed. It seems like it's hampered by some of the writing and plot but Chappie himself sounds like he's an awesome character.

Saw it yesterday. It's not good.
Script is bad, direction is meh. Actors sucks save for Chappie.
Fx are cool (save for some fire effects in the end).
It's basically District 9 without all the things that made it cool or fresh.
Seriously the whole story develops like d9... The opening with interviews (but here it's goes nowhere and never appear again) hell Even the end had a D9 twist (but I liked it).
Blopkamp need to stay the **** away from the Alien script, the only hope I have is that he is working on an existing mythology and not doing his thing.

ok, coming out of my long lurker spell to post again. :wave

i felt i just had to say something in response to the scathing reviews. especially that one above by the schmoes know. i normally agree with how they see things but this time i think they're just being biased. it feels like they're allowing their dislike of die antwoord to colour their view of the film. while ninja is sort of a despicable character to start off with, he has a clear, complete arc and by the end you see how the events change him. i actually like yolandi, she is definitely weird but casting her as a maternal figure works in an unexpected way. because she's such an unlikely person to play a mother, her scenes with chappie came off touching without being overly cloying compared to a normal/wholesome-type actress in the role. i think the film works best if you see it as a message about how parental influences are so crucial to an impressionable young mind. that bit with chappie being made to pull off crimes isn't "garbage" as the guy calls it, i see it as part of this theme. chappie is an innocent who is growing up in a world that is anything but, and the film takes a look at what kind of a "person" chappie will grow up to be. in this case the person happens to be a self-aware robot. i like this familial aspect and it resonated with me emotionally.

does the movie have its flaws? loads of them. it rips off verhoeven's robocop almost wholesale in the beginning, with dev patel basically playing a nicer bob morton and hugh hackman in the d!ck jones role. chappie is murphy/robocop, discovering his humanity after being brought back to life. some will see similarities to short circuit as well. the thing that bugs me most is how blomkamp has resorted to ripping off his OWN movies now, chiefly district 9. and while blomkamp has a lot of ideas and themes in here, like the parental aspect i mentioned, none of them are given enough attention and therefore lack depth. there's a late-in-the-movie idea he drops in that feels completely out of left field and it's there solely to allow a certain plot development. but blomkamp never sets the idea up properly so it has no satisfying payoff. it just happens, and then it's ignored.

overall, chappie is quite messy, with some really dumb writing in some places, but i still enjoyed it, and most importantly, i liked chappie. he comes off endearing to me. that comment in variety about chappie being as annoying as jar jar binks is just idiotic. i do agree with criticism about blomkamp being a weak storyteller though. he needs a good writer to give him strong material. visually, he's still a fantastic craftsman. the effects are top-notch and the action scenes are solid. just my 2 cents' on a movie that isn't great but is nowhere as bad as these critics are making it out to be.

Say what you want about Cameron but at least he knows how to write (I won't even mention that he shoots like a god).
Even an archetypal characters like Quaritch is more well written than the poor Hugh Jackman a bloodthirsty church going ex military that is not enough over the top to be funny or scary.
Blompkamp greatest quality to me is that he has a good eyes toward production design, that he hires guys like Broadmore, pierce and beck.
After 3 films that is clear that the guy must not write his own material, find the concept, and hire a competent writer.
Oh and he's gotta learn when to use slow mo properly.
Definitely not Cameron.
