ok, coming out of my long lurker spell to post again.
i felt i just had to say something in response to the scathing reviews. especially that one above by the schmoes know. i normally agree with how they see things but this time i think they're just being biased. it feels like they're allowing their dislike of die antwoord to colour their view of the film. while ninja is sort of a despicable character to start off with, he has a clear, complete arc and by the end you see how the events change him. i actually like yolandi, she is definitely weird but casting her as a maternal figure works in an unexpected way. because she's such an unlikely person to play a mother, her scenes with chappie came off touching without being overly cloying compared to a normal/wholesome-type actress in the role. i think the film works best if you see it as a message about how parental influences are so crucial to an impressionable young mind. that bit with chappie being made to pull off crimes isn't "garbage" as the guy calls it, i see it as part of this theme. chappie is an innocent who is growing up in a world that is anything but, and the film takes a look at what kind of a "person" chappie will grow up to be. in this case the person happens to be a self-aware robot. i like this familial aspect and it resonated with me emotionally.
does the movie have its flaws? loads of them. it rips off verhoeven's robocop almost wholesale in the beginning, with dev patel basically playing a nicer bob morton and hugh hackman in the d!ck jones role. chappie is murphy/robocop, discovering his humanity after being brought back to life. some will see similarities to short circuit as well. the thing that bugs me most is how blomkamp has resorted to ripping off his OWN movies now, chiefly district 9. and while blomkamp has a lot of ideas and themes in here, like the parental aspect i mentioned, none of them are given enough attention and therefore lack depth. there's a late-in-the-movie idea he drops in that feels completely out of left field and it's there solely to allow a certain plot development. but blomkamp never sets the idea up properly so it has no satisfying payoff. it just happens, and then it's ignored.
overall, chappie is quite messy, with some really dumb writing in some places, but i still enjoyed it, and most importantly, i liked chappie. he comes off endearing to me. that comment in variety about chappie being as annoying as jar jar binks is just idiotic. i do agree with criticism about blomkamp being a weak storyteller though. he needs a good writer to give him strong material. visually, he's still a fantastic craftsman. the effects are top-notch and the action scenes are solid. just my 2 cents' on a movie that isn't great but is nowhere as bad as these critics are making it out to be.
