Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

I'm curious to see how the expansion pack idea pans out. If it's profitable for the company and fans seem to like it, perhaps SSC and HT will jump on the bandwagon.

It is interesting to see how easy it is to come up with ideas that may seem ideal to fans, but aren't even remotely feasible from a manufacturing, marketing or profitably viewpoint.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

I wouldn't hate it if the compositions of the packs would make more sense. It'd be good if the heads were offered separately and complete outfits in a pack. The way it is now some people would have to buy a certain pack with 5 items of which they only need 1 or 2. Either they come up with a better option for variant fans (in addition to the expansion packs) or they'll lose out on the money they could get from those.

Why would they lose money?
People who want that 'coat+hat' look will buy the 2 packs.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

seems to me like BC is trying to do something awesome for the fans, provide customization stuff for their Doctor figure without the fans having to out and find or make the pieces themselves...

and doing it in a way that BC can support, if you recall the limited figures didn't sell out right away (are they still not sold out?) If BC offered 4 variant full figures (i.e., body, head and all the parts, etc..) it's unlikely that they'd get enough buyers to support that. This way they can offer the parts that buyers want in a way thats more affordable for everyone. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that they're offering these expansion packs when they could be moving on to the next figure (like the Tenth Doctor, which is likely to sell really well). It seems to me like they're really trying to make something nice for big fans of Doctor Who who want all the outfits, etc.

I gotta say... I know I'm a newb around here, but I dislike the term "toy" being used in a derogatory way... why do we have to put labels on them and make it seem like somehow playing with our "toys" is bad? I think we're all mostly adults here, right? I'm not ashamed of playing with toys. If someone makes an AWESOME toy, even if it's supposedly for kids, I'm going to buy it. you know what's great about being an adult? You have a paycheck and you can spend it on "toys" instead of whatever else you want, cause it's your paycheck. and how is this Doctor figure somehow a "kids toy" or a "cheap toy" or something like that at the quality level we're looking at? just because maybe you might have the option to switch out the head, braces or the coat...? Seems like that makes it way more awesome and higher value to me, not lower value...

But then I work in animation where almost every adult at the studio, including the directors and producers have "toys" lining their desks and they aren't ashamed of them.

and while I do worry about wear and tear on my toys, dolls and figures, I like when we have the option to change their clothes if we WANT to.

but then, I also like asian ball-jointed dolls like "Super Dollfie" were you remove and change out their eyes, change their wigs and change their clothes. You can even sand down their bodies, recarve them and switch out ALL their parts.

but that's me, and everyone likes their "figures" and their "play" or whatever you want to call it in different ways.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

I understand you completely, but you need to accept that you are in the minority on this point.

Just quoting this again Liz encase you missed it.:wink1:

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

Maybe, for a laughable amount of the original price. No thanks, not worth wrapping.

Depends on who you buy from and if you are willing to do a little searching or asking on the boards (here or other 1/6 sites) for those reasonable dealers. I have no intention of spending over $200 on a DX Jack Sparrow, but I love a number of the pieces of the costume and accessories. While I can find all of those pieces for a ridiculous prices on ebay and elsewhere online, I've managed to find a US dealer who is parting Jack out for a what I consider to be very reasonable prices.

I thought I might have been the only one around who was familiar with BJD and their ilk. :hi5:

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

If Big Chief put out a walking, talking Tom Baker figure that had a perfect likeness, rolling eyes, every variation of outfit, regenerated into Peter Davison and came with a 1/6 Tardis that allowed the figure to travel back in time to your childhood, all for $50, someone would hate it.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

We were talking about selling, not buying. I have bought single pieces of clothing before, that's not a problem. Selling stuff is a problem if there's little to no demand or lots of people want to get rid of the same stuff leading to too much competition, both will be the case with BC parts.

I think we' re missing each others point. I'm talking about online dealer who will buy the exspanion sets for the sole purpose of reselling pieces individually for those who dont want to buy the entire pack. Prices may be reasonable or not depending on who the dealer is. I'm speaking from a customizers point of view here and thats a fairly common practise. How common it will be for DW I dont know but if this works out, someone will end up doing this. Neither of us knows how profitable it would be , but you assume customizers wont buy the undesirables- they will and use it for something else entirely.

I can tell you really hate this idea. Sorry about that. All of us are probably worked up over nothing. I appreciate BC for at least thinking about the customizers, most companies dont'. Unfortunately, it upsets the collectors-only group it appears.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

Because we all want tiny braces that you have to close using tiny toothpicks that come undone if you adjust the trousers. Attached braces for me, please.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

Or oversized clips that look like poo. Attached for me too.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

Letting this go because I have no intention to get into personal fights with anyone over different opinions on collectibles.

**********

Are the braces even removable or are they stuck on the trousers? In that case I couldn't even use the trousers with blue braces and would need to get another pack for trousers with red braces and since they'd certainly not be in the same pack yet another one for a red bowtie provided that'd even get released sometime. That means a body & 6 packs just to get one accurate figure in addition to the original. :banghead

I must admit Liz, I think you are worrying far too much about this stuff. As you said, we still don't really know how good the figures will be so everything else is semantics. The packs are just a novel way of offering customisations that would otherwise be phenomenally expensive. Big Chief are experimenting and I commend them for that, whether it is a workable and profitable concept is still to be proven. We all respect your views and welcome you to the boards. As you can see I've been around forever, and indeed even longer as the boards were reset in 2005. I hope we are all going to be pleasantly surprised by Big Chief in 2012. I will be buying the coat pack...but no Stetson or Fez! :)

I'm still hoping for a smiling headsculpt. Matt Smith has an awesome smile.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

Isn't it Toy Fair in the UK right now? I am surprised no pics have surfaced because we know BC are there.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

the fact that I live in Germany plays a big part as hardly anyone else in this country collects Doctor Who stuff and Brits, Americans etc understandably prefer to buy from their fellow countrymen. Meaning, whatever & whoever I'd buy/sell from, *I* would be the one that overpays. Guess I just have to accept the fact that I live in the wrong country and the circumstances make collecting things, especially Doctor Who stuff, for me ******* difficult.

Oh my giddy aunt. I live just west of you. I'm in the same boat, as are many others. Don't go all "It's ME who has issues". We all overpay. It's part of the hobby and if you don't like it, find something else.

I've never seen one parted out item go for what it's supposed to go. Every shirt, shoe, coat, head, .. goes for way more than retail.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 announcement!

How about no more talk on this subject until we get actual prices for these packs!?
