Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

For those who don't know:

I was ranting about this 'expansion pack vs variants' thing a while ago, has all been deleted because it escalated. In a nutshell, I was against the pack idea from the start for various reasons (having to get who knows how many packs in order to complete one figure and having to buy stuff you don't really want/need along with it, far too much hassle if you want to make more than one variant, will most likely cost more than a variant would have cost etc). Back then almost everyone was picking on me but now several people are saying the same things I already said months ago and it seems like they are starting to see the drawbacks of those expansion packs. Even more so once they'll see the prices I suspect. Anyway, seems like many people are planning to make variants and display several Elevens, Tens etc side by side rather than using the packs as an extention for the figure they already own and for those people it would have been easier if they had provided ready made variants.

Also:

I TOLD YOU SO!!! :dance

No. I don't see anyone here agreeing with that. I commented that the option to go either way would be nice. I then said I would probably end up getting two 11s and all the expansions.

Personally, I love the idea of accessory packs. I hope it catches on and HT and SS start doing it too. I want every extra accessory and head BC care to share.

My ideal would be if they offered both expansions and variant completed figures, but I love that they're offering accessories. Surely they'll end up giving us more options this way than sales of whole alternate figures would have justified?

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

No argument there. I'd be more than happy to buy complete varients. I will definitely be building complete figures. No way am I aving one figure up, and changing it every now and again. The expansion packs could cut down on bulk tho, for postage purposes. As long as there is enough in each kit to build (dress) a complete figure then I'm happy. Either way, I get a bunch of Doctors :yess:

Uh... Anyway, here's a nice look at the Cybermat figures. I thought the 5" CO versions would do, but these seems to be much bigger and bitey-er.

The first BC monsters! ;)

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

It looks like you need to get at least a few bits of clothing , but that may be taken care of. In the end, if you bought a couple of each expansion packs (the ones without the heads ), you could put together the completed figures of Fez and Cowboy hatted Doctor, and Ganger Doctor.

Ah. That might be the solution then. If they sell us the body and then we can assemble a full wardrobe, then we're set.

Haha.. First BC monsters... Me likes.

Yup, best of both worlds. I think BC are trying hard to meet everyone's needs and wants, which I'm sure isn't easy.

I was breaking that down for Cowboy Doctor and came to the conclusion that even if you buy all packs there will always be parts missing that you need to complete a cetain figure which means you'll have to buy even more packs.

My opinion: expansion packs are great for people who want to use it as an extention for their original figure, not so great for people who want to make variants.

Jeez, I'm really not in the mood to discuss this yet again, people will find out themselves eventually.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

But it's also fun, putting figures together.
My spare hot toys Peter Parker, jonny blaze and Bruce Wayne have all been turned into full figures.
Now, these aren't screen accurate, but I don't mind, as I had fun putting them together, even stealing boots from a has bro Indy for blaze!
Well have to see how these packs are ultimately put together, but I do think we will need extras from different packs to build the figures, but I can live with that.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Can't believe I forgot to take pics of Amy and Angel!!!

We arrived a bit late and had to meet other partners... So was only with BC for about 10min.

Did get pics of the Baker St Boys but can't show!!! If I did BC will have my scalp!! I value my scalp!! They are good!! ;)

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Liz. Calm down a bit. You seem to come across as angry.

I actually agree with you to a point. The packs are cool of you want to modify or alternate your existing figure but for true variants you will need more than the packs. Maybe if BCS made trousers etc available as another dr pack ?

So you could assemble the whole figure. They have stated
The bodies will be available.

I would like Amy in her police outfit but if I could buy an expansion pack and a base body it has got to be cheaper than an Amy and an expansion pack

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Right, I finally have time to write down my thoughts about this figure properly.

I totally eat my words on it - when you have it in hand you realise that it is worth every penny as a figure in its own right, and NOT just because I love the character, or Matt Smith's portrayal of him. Nor do I have money to burn - I was originally going to get Eleven and Amy, then had some unexpected bills, then had an unexpected ebay windfall - it was pure luck that I could get this figure, and boy, if I thought it wasn't worth it you'd be reading it now.

Basically, this is almost, almost a Hot Toys quality figure, when I ws expecting a Sideshow quality figure. I've owned and held hundreds of high quality figures and I've never had one that was so much better in hand than in pictures. The sculpt is perfect, the tailoring is excellent, the from-scratch body is well articulated with tight joints, the accessories and stand are all top quality. The paint job too is on the whole excellent; in fact, I prefer the eyework to Hot Toys, which can be somehow too perfect, with almost machine like precision. And it's also a puzzle because in photos the eyes have always looked slightly doll-like, yet they look great in hand, lifelike and yet with a hand painted quality. My one question mark is the skin tone. It is a little too dark anyway, but in addition the darker paint around the jawline appears to be present also on the cheekbones on my figure. I'm going to live with the figure for a few days before I contact BC, but I may not do so at all - depends how I feel about it in different lights. I would like a future release not to have such dark skin tone though, although I know oriental factories have a habit of producing oriental skin tones.

Which leads me to my main point - this figure is miraculous when you consider how hard it is to get factories in China to do excellent work and to do what you want. Hot Toys are the best because they're local and speak the language, so for BC to be almost, almost as good - on their first ****ing release - is just unbelieveable. It shows what a great company this is. Anyone who's heard the horror stories about PE and CO's first experiences with Chinese manufacturers will feel some sort of collective knighthood is in order for BC for managing to obtain work of this quality first time round. Companies as big as Hasbro can't always get their China factories to do what they want.

There are a few minor niggles, and you know what - they don't matter. Yeah, my figure came out of the box with a button missing on the sleeve. So what? It's a handmade figure. Yes, the neck is too short. Again, so what. 90% of high end figures need some kind of modding or can benefit from it. I haven't had a chance to check out the body properly yet but it's clearly on a par with the truetype. One thing I would say is that although it's thin it's been designed for a character with a conventionally heroic body shape but Matt doesn't have a 'heroic' chest with his shirt off or big muscles, and consequently the clothes are a tight fit on a muscular body whereas on Matt they're a tight fit on a skinny body! So they look slightly wrong. Perhaps BC need to remember that most of the Doctors didn't have conventionally heroic body shapes.

As I said, I completely take back what I said and I love this figure. The idea that I might one day own a Troughton figure of this quality... wow, just wow. These guys are going to legends and it's great to be in on it at the beginning. The icing on the cake for me was opening my figure then a few minutes later finding out that they appear to be doing Sherlock too!!! I hope BC maintain a British focus and carve out a niche for themselves there. All the Doctors obviously, Sherlock, maybe classic British film characters - like Michael Caine from the Italian Job! - classic telly- Regan from the Sweeney! - and Bond would be a natural for them. Perhaps they should do a Daniel Craig Layer Cake figure to help them win the licence. How about a Bobby Moore figure in his 1966 kit with Jules Rimet cup...?

This company has totally got me into action figures again, I can see I won't be able to afford most of their output but I am going to get what I can (9, 10 and Troughton are must buys for me) and I cannot recommend them highly enough based on 11. I also love the way they listen and respond to the comments we've been making. We should treat that response as the privilige it is, not as a right to be responded to.

As for what's been shown today the stetson dr looks great, although it'snot a look I'm interested in; Fez doctor, I don't know, I loved the wax sculpt but something about the characterisation on this head looks slightly off - he looks a bit too confident, or smug. But then again I wouldn't bet against it coming right in the final version. And for some reason everyone, including me, loves that mop!

I carry a mop now. Mops are cool.

Well said cap.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Glad you were happy with the end result, Captain Britain!
I tell you, the wait for these to get to the US is killing me. Not pay an extra $50 killing me, but close. :D

Thanks for the pics breakersrevenge! They are nice and in focus, which is good after the pics we're seeing. I'm gutted you didn't get any of the Angel, but I'm sure BC will be releasing some pics of those soon. I wonder if Amy has changed up any since we first saw her or it's the same proto we've seen. It seems like it might be the final paint job on the head as she was in production when the female body problems were discovered, right?

Thanks for sharing! The 4th Doctor figure is nice, but man, that 10th Doctor steals the cake! Takes the show? Regardless, it's freaking awesome!
