Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I see where you are coming from bcm but Sideshow can hardly do worse than Character Options did with the 1:6 range and more likely they would improve on it.

If the quality was guaranteed to be more or less the same as ANH Obi-Wan on every figure then I'd be inclined to agree but until Sideshow have a similar level of consistency as Hot Toys I'll remain sceptical.
With the exception of that Obi-Wan and to a lesser extent Asajj Ventress Sideshow have messed up every single one of the SW characters I wanted most in some way or other so it will take a LOT of improvement to get me convinced they are worth spending my money on again.

Which is again why I said wait for the Pro body. With that they are taking a more HT approach, best examples being the Hobbits. If the heads turn out like those with Indy, CW Obi and other Pro figures then I think we're onto something. Still my vote goes for HT just because of how relatively niche the property is.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Its all moot anyway... No way in hell SSC would ever take on the Doctor Who license. Is there a British collectibles company who is comparable to SS? Then I could see it happening.

I don't think so. The best chance would have been Product Enterprises but we all know what happened there.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Here's the 2nd part of the interview with the guy from Character Options,

https://www.doctorwhotoys.net/alasdair_dewar.htm

Some possible good news as sculpts of Patrick Troughton,Jon Pertwee,Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann have been approved but given the man's attitude towards how the Classic line should be marketed ( He seems to be convinced that ALL kids watch the old stories on UK Gold and therefore will want all the monsters and villains but not the companions as they won't know who they were. WTF???? ) I'm not entirely confident that the line is going to last more than 3 waves.

As long as we get all classic doctors. Thats what I care about most.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

That he does! Also Marc, Tom is going out in about 20 minutes! I'll drop you all the info via PM when I get back from the post office. .. ya know that's something I always wondered. Why do we call it the post office but over time the postman has become mailman, wonder how that happened.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Sounds good.

Per post vs. mail. Who knows? Why do we drive on the parkway and park on the driveway? Why did the Doctor shack up with Mel? Why do we do anything? What were we talking about again?

:lol

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

We were talking about the fact that FPI apparently has carded empty Davros in stock but for once Im not ordering it and waiting for my Stolen Earth set to come in.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Yeah that sucks... But at least you get that awesome claw-arm dalek.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Yea I hate to wait but I figured I'd get Stolen Earth (all for the Daleks, not for the Doctor) and grab the Staal figure from the Sontaran Set off eBay. I really want more of those claw Daleks though.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

CO's "only for kids" mentality could mean they lose out on a lot of profits.
If they embraced the adult collector market they could find that the Classic Who line would continue to be a sizeable cash cow long after the kids have lost intrest.
Look at Hasbro & Star Wars, there's no way they pump out all those Clone Trooper variants or obscure background characters just for kids.
They know damn well about the "1 of everything" mentality that many adult collectors have and exploit it to the fullest.
I can understand CO's caution over some of the companions but I can name 3 that would almost certainly sell well,

1.Sarah Jane Smith ( Total no brainer as she's been in Nu-Who and also has her own series )

2.Leela ( Scantily clad female. Need I say more? )

3.The Brigadier ( Appeared with more Doctors than any other companion/ally and is returning to the Whoniverse in series 2 of SJA )

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I hate to say it but (though CO's QC is great) they are the British equivalent of Hasbro. Unless a higher end company gets a license under CO's license, adult collectors will never be inconsideration. It sucks that they have a classic Tardis that will never see the light of day.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Not only that I think it is kind of arrogant to have someone in charge of the line who is passing his own views of Doctor Who on to the paying public. Im sorry if he didn't like the celery but it sure made a big hit, people WANT Sylvester's brolly and hat. Campy though it was, it was all Doctor Who. I think it's a combination of the BBC being fairly lax with their licensing. Im sure if he knew he could get it done first shot, Colin would have been in the blue outfit from Big Finish.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Are we clear on whether or not Sylvester will get his umbrella? I haven't heard a definite answer either way on that one and it boggles the mind what they are thinking if they don't.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

The way he and Missi have been talking, it sounds like Ghost Light Seven will not have it but will have something else said by Missi to be his favorite accessory yet. I'm just stoked that the next 123 wave is going to have a Time Lord AND Jabe! She's one that I always wondered why they hadn't made her. As for the rest of the wave, probably will see Bride Donna and nonCoated Jack. Maybe the old and ancient Doctor as well.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I keep lurking this thread, wondering whether there will be any 12" news...and now that I've got the word, I've gone from despair to optimism in a few short posts. The 12" license is probably up for grabs. Good!

Meanwhile, gotta say that this is the sweetest 5" line ever. Amazing tiny sculpts. I drifted away from small figures years ago, but I just put a few on the desk...

WHO rules.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I haven't heard CO is soliciting the 12 inch license (like Hasbro did with Sideshow on Star Wars) but that would be excellent news and they could only make money doing it.
