Star Wars totally stole all the spotlight tonight. Two new 12" figures, one new diorama, a RAH Sandtrooper...

...that's like more than the entire LOTR output for '07 in just one day.

Sad but true :(

I guess I'm not disapointed, I'm kind of used to seeing nothing new for SS with LOTR just an onslaught of Star Wars which is always cool but still more LOTR!:gandalf :emperor :monkey2

It's really getting to the point of pathetic. We know 2 are "in the works", but it's beyond ridiculous that's it's been 13 freaking months between announcements.

Even if they kill the line I won't ditch Frodo or Lurtz because I really like them, but I would like to see the Fellowship take less than 10 years to produce. Oh well.

And even when they do announce another piece it is going to be MONTHS before it ships.

It was damn near year for Frodo

So they announce it in the newsletter next week. Goes up for pre-order the following (say end of March 07) expect to see it in March 08.:monkey2

Ever since the untimely demise of the SS/W line it's been a heartbreak after heartbreak for the LOTR collectors.

I suppose that's what happens when you have a bitter divorce in the top creative echelon responsible for the movies we so love; and PJ growing bitter with New Line, and neither side really caring anymore for the upkeep of the property. It seems it's all about the raw royalties nowadays.

I suppose PJ ought to have learned that the creative side must keep the core rights if the property is to thrive for decades. George Lucas had his bitter divorces (from the Writers' Guild, Directors' Guild, 20th Century-Fox, and his wife) right around the time the OT was being completed, but he still kept the rights -- and look where SW is now.

If PJ and New Line keep up their greedy idiocy, it's only natural we fans will keep on suffering. It just doesn't seem that there's anyone particularly caring for the LOTR collectibles at the side of New Line (who kept the rights) anymore; they stretch out their "approval process", and possibly tie Sideshow's hands in many other bureaucratic ways, as if they have no long-term interest in the viability of this property.

Which is, of course, ridiculous with The Hobbit on the (distant) horizon. But it still seems like that's exactly what they're doing.

I still think Sideshow ought to be working much harder on their end, mind you; I just don't think New Line ought to be absolved of their share of responsibility for this pathetic state of affairs.

Ok, maybe; but how do we reconcile Gentle Giant's ability to churn out LOTR products --- they have done about 8-10 products already, in a about a year!? :horror

That is more than SS has done in their entire line. :monkey2

We don't reconcile, honestly.

GG is quickly turning LOTR into its flagship line; and for some reason, New Line is not a problem for them. I dunno.

I just hope it's not all Sideshow's fault, that's all...

Wait, que? I don't have the GG LOTR busts in hand yet, but I've seen them, and they don't seem to be lower quality at all.
I have both in hand, and they are definitely not "lower" quality. The likeness on Viggo is way better than I expected, and the overall detail is quite good as well. There may be slightly[/]i less detail in these pieces than there is in some of the better the SSW 1/6th scale polystone statues, but not that much, really.

I am very pleased with mine.

Now, back on topic, it just seems that Sideshow has largely given up on the LOTR license (along with Buffy, Universal Monsters, and many of their other licenses). They are making so much more money from the Star Wars stuff (and Marvel, to a lesser degree) that almost everything else seems to be getting moved to the back burner, so to speak.

If that's indeed the case, then it's very sad.

No company was ever in a better position to RULE the LOTR fandom than Sideshow right after their split with Weta. They had just come off the defining high-end collectible line of the modern times, and every LOTR collector in the world knew their name and their number. They could've just moved in and mopped the place up.

Now it looks like GG is going to do it instead, which is a bit saddening, but not undeserved...

Not with this collector, I will wait (impatiently) for just one or two PFs, Legendary Busts or Dioramas before I get into the GG bust line (ha, ha) ....

Even if it takes a LOOOOOOOOOONG time. :rip

I hope I don't stand alone. :monkey2

I'll gladly sell you my spare Ringwraith bust for just $300 at that time, Matt. :D

If you throw in a Skittle or Cheerio, you might just have yourself a deal -- I will need SOMETHING for the trinket holder.

Nope, I have sworn off all-things GG bust related, I have just never been too impressed with them (after owning quite a few of the SW ones).
