Citing an unnamed source, UK-based video game industry magazine Develop is reporting that Microsoft has provided Electronic Arts with development hardware that will become the next Xbox as early as 2012.

According to the report, the hardware is housed in a PC shell, a common practice for early console development kits. Develop's source, described as a "senior, trusted, well-placed" person who works at neither EA nor Microsoft, told the magazine an E3 2011 reveal is likely.

Re: Next Xbox at E3?

Wow, next-gen in the next couple of years? I thought the PS3 & Xbox 360 would at least have a good lifetime of 8-9 years before they kill 'em and decide to go next-gen, just like the PSx. :(

Re: Next Xbox at E3?

I don't think that's likely, only one year after the Kinect. Plus for whatever big games come out would be screwed by a new console release.

Sounds good to me. The 360 has had a pretty good run. Hopefully they can prevent any RROD-type of issues.

Re: Next Xbox at E3?

i think nintendo has forced their hand

Not really, Microsoft and Sony are in a good position. Despite how the new Nintendo console will be more powerful, I don't think there will be many third-party developers planning exclusives for it, in which case they would develop games for that would also run on Xbox 360 and PS3

And then Microsoft and Sony can release their new consoles in 2013, and then we'll be back in the same situation. Developers would work on games for the new Microsoft and Sony consoles and not the new Nintendo console since it would then be too low-powered.

microsoft knows the power of coming out first in console gen wars.....360's success was built on it

Re: Next Xbox at E3?

Its about time for the next xbox anyways. I'll get it whenever it comes out.

Re: Next Xbox at E3?

developers haven't fully harnessed the power of the current gen xbox... the industry needs to focus more on the software side of things for the next few years.

Re: Next Xbox at E3?

I'm shocked since as late as last year Microsoft was claiming no new XBOX for another few years. What would be the progression to force an entirely new console? Something tells me that it won't be Cloud Based tech (just an assumption) but what else is there?

UPDATES:

Update 2: A trusted development source tells IGN, "To the best of my knowledge no one here knows what [the new Xbox] will be. Only that it will probably drop in 2013."

Update 1: An unnamed source tells Eurogamer an E3 2011 reveal for Microsoft's next Xbox is "highly unlikely," putting Develop's E3 rumor to rest for now.

Looks like this rumor was a bit premature.

Compared to the PS3--yes, but the Wii has made way more money from console sales. Coming out by themselves is good, so that they can avoid people having to choose between two newly released consoles.

But again, just consider all the big games coming out next year, probably GTV, now Mass Effect 3, Bioshock Infinite. They would have a fantastic year with all those great games along with announcing a new console at E3 2012 and the release of a new Nintendo console.

Re: Next Xbox at E3?

I don't buy it. I'd bet that come E3 in June, the supposed new tech from Microsoft will be a no-show and the best we'll get are vague hints or broad "We are working on it" statements. In any case, if devs like EA just now received some sort of kit from Microsoft, it'd be a ways away from a new announcement

The 360 just hit its stride. Why would they want to cannibalize business by announcing the next machine so soon? I makes sense for Nintendo to announce new hardware; the Wii is outdated and its sales have slumped. Neither are true for 360 just yet. The thing is still hot.
