We should talk about other teams for ****s and giggles... because us touting our own teams gets kind of old and boring.... fast.
There are 30 teams in the NHL.
How about the rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton. Edmonton has had 4 straight years of top 3 picks, and 3 of those years being 1st overall selections... yet they are on the basement floor with the Buffalo Sabres. And with the Sabres play of late, they maybe pushing above the Oil. Back to Edmonton, this is a team that has had 3 1st overall picks, a 3rd overall selection this year, signed arguably the most hyped and touted defenseman in College hockey in recent memory in Justin Schultz. Also added two big top six forwards in David Perron and Teddy Purcell. So what's the dealio? Yes, mediocre defence and goaltending, and obviously a coach who isn't connecting with his young team.
Then you have Calgary, who looks like a joke on paper, who lost their top star to Summer Free Agency in Mike Cammalleri, lost their former Vezina stud goaltender, Miikka Kiprusoff to retirement. Have been handed a slew of injuries, including their top drafted pick, Sam Bennett! Yet the team is 13-6-2 in the standings, with a team goal differential of plus-10! I hear Michael Babcock wants to finish his coaching career out in Calgary after this season, which has been the rumours swirling around. His family is from there, so he wants to be closer... but here's the thing, no way in hell does another coach get so much that Bob Hartley does out of that roster. Seriously, their forward crop ranks among the very worst. Yet they are playing like they are in the top mix. Moving along... This is also a former Stanley Cup winning coach, with the Colorado Avalanche. I am starting to believe this run that the Flames are having is for real. They are definitely not a product of overplaying themselves, but being a product of a well coached, hard working organization, that backcheck, forechecks... doesn't have any quit (last night's game they were down by a pair and came back to win the game illustrates that), they play a strong physical, high tempo game of speed led by Mason Raymond (currently on the IR), Paul Byron, and former Hobey Baker standout, Johnny "Hockey" Gaudreau. The best pairing on D led by captain Mark Giordano and another supremely skilled push rushing blueliner, in parter T.J. Brodie, not to mention they are backstopped by a stellar tandem in Jonas Hiller and Karri Ramo. Brian Burke and company are schooling teams on how to do it properly in-house, drafting in the later rounds like Detroit, but unlike Detroit, being a highly competitive team despite lacking the star power of the aforementioned teams.
