Re: Nintendo 3DS

Never played a Legends game, what are they like? I do like the regular Mega Man series, as well as some of the X games.

They're 3d action/adventure games. Nothing like traditional Mega Man, but they were fun for the time.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Wow...Price drop already...

Boy, those 3DS sales sure fell off a cliff. So much so that Nintendo has instituted one of the swiftest and deepest price cuts for a handheld in recent memory.

The 3DS only went on sale earlier this year for $249, but as of August 12, it'll be slashed all the way down to $169.99. That's...wow.

"For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime says of the move. "We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games."

In addition to the price cut for new consumers, those who bought/buy a 3DS before the August 12 markdown will be able to download 20 free games from the 3DS eShop. That offer comes in the form of ten NES Virtual Console games (including classics like Zelda and Super Mario Bros.), which will be available after September 1, and ten Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games (like Yoshi's Island and Metroid Fusion), which will be available a little later.

Yes, you read that right. In addition to original Game Boy games already available there will also be a Game Boy Advance Virtual Console and a NES Virtual Console for the 3DS.

In ___an, the cuts take the 3DS from ¥25,000 to ¥15,000. In Europe, while no exact price has been revealed, Nintendo says the rrp will be cut by "around a third". In Australia, the 3DS will be from AUD$350 all the way down to AUD$250 (with the same twenty-game offer).

Re: Nintendo 3DS

This has me worrying a bit. This could be for 3 reasons:

1) The system is already dead.
2) They are making an upgraded system already and are trying to sell off stock
3) They are EXTREMELY worried about the new PSV and they are cutting the price for that.

I like my 3DS but there are no games worth buying. If they really want to sell 3DS systems then they need to make real games that aren't rehashes.

I'll definitely take my 20 free games, but yeah I'm ticked that I shelled out full price just over a month ago. I'm not really worried about the 3DS, but they should be mindful that there's tougher competition out now.

1) I don't think it's dead, but Nintendo just needs to pump out NEW ORIGINAL games instead of hoping to survive off of re-releasing classics from their stable...this includes the Virtual console games.
2) I sincerely hope this is not the case. I don't know why they'd pull this one off, but I do know how Nintendo likes to churn out new handhelds
3) They should be worried about Sony's new PSV. It's really looking badass. Nintendo seems to have limited themselves with just going for the 3D gimmick. I know the title is probably giving it away, but the 3DS is basically a tricked out DS Lite. Nintendo should've focused on really adding some new featureS instead of just 3D.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I wouldn't be surprised of the Vita has trouble as well. There is immense competition in the handheld market now that everyone has a smartphone.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I think it's obvious Nintendo got scared. They're shaken, you can feel it. Whether it was rightly so, I don't know. The 3DS moved a mere 800k stock in its (not even) 4 months since release in North America. Those numbers are abysmal, but if you set them against the 4-5 million consolidated sales globally, it's not so bad. They got scared. Was it because of the Vita? Is it because of Apple's looming shadow? I'm not sure, but what I find interesting that the current situation for the 3DS somewhat reflects that of the original DS's life in its first year. Sales were underwhelming UNTIL Mario Kart came out and the numbers saw another bump once the revision hit (DS Lite). Not once did they drop the price within a good 1-2 years of that system's release. What changed? The DS was a brand new, untested platform, but they stuck by it, price unchanged.

The difference between Nintendo back then and Nintendo now is the Wii. I think Nintendo became arrogant due to the Wii's immense success. The market has changed, and $250 is just too much for a handheld gaming device for most people.

I was an early adopter. Do I regret my decision? No, not really. I got 4 months of good time with it and will get 20 free games come September. But I can't help but feel this sting. $80 is 1/3 of the unit's price. I'll admit that I wasn't anticipating such a dramatic price reduction not even half a year into the system's release. If nothing else, it's made me wary of being an early adopter of the Wii-U.

This has me worrying a bit. This could be for 3 reasons:

1) The system is already dead.
2) They are making an upgraded system already and are trying to sell off stock

1) I don't think the system is dead. Too soon to call not even a year through. 2) Possible, but unlikely. A price drop for current hardware is usually announced after or simultaneously with the reveal of a hardware revision/upgrade. With this price drop, I'd imagine Nintendo knows that it has probably angered millions of buyers already and will probably avoid announcing a new revision anytime soon.

3) Almost definitely. But where does that leave the Vita?

I wouldn't be surprised of the Vita has trouble as well. There is immense competition in the handheld market now that everyone has a smartphone.

I agree. The 3DS's current dire situation doesn't help Vita in any way. If 3DS, the successor to the most popular gaming handheld, released to disappointing sales, what would it mean to Sony's niche platform? The PSP was always a niche, it never gained as much mainstream success as the DS. If anything, Nintendo drastically cutting their price puts the Vita in a terrible position.

Not picked mine up since I beat zelda. This system needs more games. There is nothing. A few titles in the future but at the moment it's dead.

I wouldn't say dead but more like dead in the water.

I agree with all of Plasmid's points. I too was actually angry at Nintendo yesterday for being hit with this $80 price decrease. Would I rather have $80 than 20 free old games? Yes.

But I learned yesterday in my anger that I'm not as loyal to Nintendo as I've been. This hit has made me want to wait a while for the Wii-U or even skip it entirely. If Nintendo is willing to do this now then what will they do when Xbox and Sony reveal their new systems the month before or a few months after the Wii-U release? This is a dark time for Nintendo and they are stuck in a weird place between system releases. This point along with their reluctance to redesign their characters/designs for the Wii-U (bringing them into the HD era) has me scared for their future.

At this point I would love for Nintendo to just become a software and controller developer and jump on the Xbox and Sony. Imagine Nintendo making the next Mario for all platforms along with releasing a controller for each system that blows away the current controllers we have.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

just came back from walmart

170 bucs but if you trade old ds 70bucs.
amazing deal but still wont buy it till MGS comes out.

kinda glad I waited to buy this thing.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

not to add further gas to the fire, but target and walmart were selling the 3ds for $170 here two days ago so people could buy the system at the reduced price and qualify for 20 free games. that made me seriously think about going for it. i just really dont have the cash for it right now. priorities and whatnot.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I'll wait till Resident Evil: Revelations comes out before I get this but at least now for $170, I'm much more inclined to pick up one of these sooner rather than later.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I wanted to be sure about these free ambassador games. I bought the game at launch and went on the e-shop to get my free copy of Excite Bike and browse a couple of times. I haven't been on it for a month or so now, though. Am I still good to go on getting the free games?

You should be good to go, Boba.
