Re: Nintendo 3DS

Played with a demo unit the other day.

My two cents on the 3DS.

The graphics are amazing and the games are fun. However my eyes were strained big time after playing with it for 20 minutes. When you first look at the screen in 3D, it's disorienting and eventually your eyes put the images together. But this soon starts to take a strain on your eyes. Thankfully for people who want a great new handheld but don't want 'new' health effects from the system can turn the 3D effect off (and it looks great and normal with the effect off).

The 3D is a gimmick and honestly I cannot see any good coming out of playing 3DS games in 3D over a long period of time (meanings hours and over the life of the system).

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Yeah my battery has been going fairly strong for me as well.

The hinge seems a tad loose though, not horrid but could be better.

Anyone else have the issue that if you play for a period of time, and then read something (norm of forums), that the text itself starts to have that 3d effect as well?

I was noticing that when talking to my boss this morning that the world had the same 3D effect as the DS. It seemed like everything was on 3 or 4 planes.

Very strange.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I had my first 3DS injury 2 days ago. While playing Face Raiders I some how twisted my knee. I didn't notice it then but it's been KILLING ME for 2 days now.

Beware!!

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Ive taken my system with me to work and a few other places the last few days. Have yet to have anything happen with StreetPass which is a shame since it seems like a neat feature. I especially wanna see it work with Street Fighter.

ALSO, apparently the 3DS Resident Evil Revelations was pushed back until 2012.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Had 2 hits so far with StreetPass. I live near a university, a lot of gamers in a densely packed area.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I took my 3DS to the Florida Mall here in Orlando. I got 4 hits in the Gamestop store but I think they were all employees. Either way, it is a darn cool feature and I hope to bring it to the mall any time I go.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

What are these hits you speak of? They just tell you how many gamers are in your general area if they have a 3DS?

Street Fighter - It does an auto quick match using 5 collected figures from both players collection. Winner gets something I think. The match is basically best of 5 rounds.

Nintendogs - The dogs/owners meet and they get gifts from one another, and the ability to meet up at the park for the pets to play together.

Mii Plaza allows you to meet the Mii and get a puzzle piece from the to compelete the Mii puzzle. They Mii can also be used for the dungeon game as well.

Not sure what other games use it, but those are the ones I know for sure.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Ridge Racer's Streetpass function beams another person's racing ghost into your game so you can race against it and try to beat their best time.

I really dig streetpass. Right now there aren't many 3DS owners out there so the feature isn't being fully utilized. Time will tell.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

3DS Sound uses Streetpass to show other gamers what you are listening to. This would be great for independant bands to peak others interests.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

am i missing something? i tried the system at gamestop and i was very disappointed. i was expecting 3d to be like when i saw avatar in 3d, instead this was just a screen that appeared to b deeper per say than it was, having depth. i was expecting the appearance of the game to seem to come out of the screen.

yep...you're missing something.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

It depends on the game. Some games have a more pronounced pop-out effect than others. A lot of titles excel at creating depth rather than portruding out of the screen.

Out of the games I've been playing, Street Fighter IV 3D has the best pop-out 3D effect when played in the 3D view mode. Rayman 3D also looks great when I'm firing Rayman's energy attack torwards the camera, making it look like they're coming out of the screen.

On the other hand, Ridge Racer and Pilotwings recede rather pop out.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Mine hurts my eyes.
Not all the games, but playing Asphalt gives you cross eyes after 5mins! Depends where on the screen you have to focus. With racing games you have to look into the distance not the foreground so it kinda goes crazy.

Worth the pain, I guess.

Thanks for confirming that!

I am only getting this for Ocarina of Time, so very glad you can turn the effect off.

i guess you haven't found the "sweet spot" ;D

Re: Nintendo 3DS

After a week of owning this, I think I've changed my mind on liking the glossy exterior of the 3DS and would've rather preferred a matte finish. Gloss makes it look sleek and new, but because the 3DS tends to heat up after some use, my hands get sweaty using it and then after a while I have to wipe down the 3DS. :lol

Not to mention that gloss attracts dust like no one's business.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

^Actually Nintendo, GAME and HMV have already refuted that article from the (dubiously sourced) Sun publication. I don't think anyone takes that paper seriously.

NINTENDO, GAME AND HMV REFUTE 3DS CLAIMS

Platform holder says reports are "incorrect"; GAME has had "fewer than five complaints"; HMV has not offered refunds

Nintendo has branded claims about 3DS refunds and dizziness made in The Sun this morning as "incorrect".

In addition, both GAME and HMV have denied issuing refunds to customers.

The paper this morning claimed that "thousands" of users have suffered either dizziness or headaches after using the device and that some retailers are offering refunds on the machine.

"Recent reports are incorrect," a Nintendo UK spokesperson told MCV. "The number of calls and emails with queries on Nintendo 3DS is in fact well below the rate experienced during past hardware launches and having spoken with our retail partners there are only a handful of people who have actually gone into stores to request a refund.

"Nintendo 3DS was designed with a 3D depth slider that lets users adjust the 3D effect so that everyone can still enjoy this product. When viewing any kind of 3D images, including movies and on TV, some people might experience minor discomfort.

"The effects are short term and have no lasting effect; most people can continue after taking a break. Customers with any concerns should contact their local Nintendo Customer Support via www.nintendo.co.uk or on 0870 6060247.”

In addition, retailer GAME has confirmed to MCV that it has had "fewer than five complaints" about feelings of dizziness from 3DS users.

MCV understands that as the returned devices are not technically faulty many retailers aren't offering full refunds, though most are able to accept the machine as a trade-in.

HMV has told MCV that it has not issued any refunds on the 3DS. Indeed, The Sun has since amended the story online.

"Contrary to a report in today's media – which has since been corrected – we would like to make clear that we are not aware of any manufacturing fault with the 3DS console – which we have seen huge demand for, and that we have not issued any refunds for it and nor are we doing.

"A relatively small number of customers are, however, choosing to take us up on our pre-played games offer – which is a totally different thing, where they can trade-in previously purchased games products, including the 3DS if they so choose, against any other products that we stock in-store up to a pre-determined set value.

"We are currently offering a trade-in value of up to £200 on the 3DS – but trade-in values are reviewed all the time and this may well change after April 7th. Games trade-ins have become increasingly popular with gamers in recent years, and are a standard feature of the UK games market, with many retailers making them available to their customers."

But to actually answer your question, I think the buttons on the 3DS are better than the DS Lite's but you should go into it expecting for them to be clicky and resistive. The circle pad (the analogue stick) is very comfortable. I still don't like the placement of the Start and Select and Power buttons though.

And yes the graphics are much better than on the DS.
