No more super-sized Cokes. Forget about stomach-busting 64-ounce sodas at KFC. Even 20-ounce Snapples are on Mayor Bloomberg’s latest heath-conscious hit list.

New York City plans to ban the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks in an effort to combat obesity.

The proposed first-in-the-nation ban would impose a 16-ounce limit on the size of sweetened drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters, sports venues and street carts. It would apply to bottled drinks as well as fountain sodas.

The ban, which could take effect as soon as March, wouldn't apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks or alcoholic beverages.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that he "thinks it's what the public wants the mayor to do."

From what I hear the restriction of super size is the least of the US problems. I haven't been there but apparently your takeaway meals are massive compared to here, but you should have the choice to restrict yourselves and not be forced

Most of the problems in this country can be reduced to the same thing as this: fascists who think they know better than the rest of us how to live our lives (which they don't really consider to be ours) passing laws that hold a gun to the head of anyone who doesn't bow in awe of their superior wisdom.

One of the most disgusting things I saw recently was on a trip my wife and I took to NYC. We took a cab to the trade center memorial. We were greeted to barricades, and then told to come back tomorrow. Not only that but that we would have to purchase tickets to get in. That's right, we couldn't even see what they have done with the memorial so far bacause it was all blocked off.

We must have a bad reputation then because I looked at the McDonald's menu for Australia and compared it to the US and the calories are about the same.
Mcd's Large french fries:
US: 500 calories
AU: 453.8 calories (conversion from KJ)
Mcd's Big Mac:
US: 550 calories
AU: 492 calories (conversion from KJ)
Mcd's Large Coke:
US: 310
AU: 223 calories (conversion from KJ)

That's what's in the largest Extra Value Meal here in the US.
I also get the feeling that the McDonald's calories are rounded up for their US menu just to be safe, either that or the calorie converter I used is off.
The US versions are a little higher, but not by much, I certainly wouldn't say they're massive by comparison.

I'll tell you all what...after the courts ruled to drop some of the charges against a man who was viewing child pornography on the internet simple because he did not download the pics and didn't know the thumbnails were being stored on his computer...nothing surprises me coming from New York any more.

They make way too much money bilking the tobacco companies to restrict it any more than it already is. Between taxes and the state lawsuits from the late 90's, they know they have too much to gain from people continuing to get sick and/or die.
