It's like giving the "Best Picture Oscar" to a film still in preproduction.

Well, given the role that hype plays in determining Oscar winners, that's not too far from the way that award show actually works. How many times have we heard about "Oscar buzz" for a movie that hasn't even been released yet

Oh this thread is going to be a fun one.

I do agree with your analogy though. It's not a case of liking or disliking him, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he'll earn it. But he hasn't yet. And really I feel its unfair to other winners and nominees who have devoted their lives to the pursuit of peace.

:lol:lol:lol

Wait, Obama won the Nobel Peace prize? I wish someone had posted this awesome news sooner.

Some past winners: Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Yasser Arafat and Le Duc Tho (founder of the Indochinese Communist Party).

Some past nominees: Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, and Adolf Hitler.

EDIT: I'm not comparing Obama to these fine gentlemen, obviously. Just pointing out how ludicrous the Nobel really is.

I think my nephew has the potential to be an awesome football player.

He's only 8 now, but I think he should be given a full scholarship based on what may happen.

:lol:lol:lol Past nominees say alot about what merit (if any) the award holds.

With the exception of Al Gore... I wouldn't want to be mentioned in the same breath with the other people you brought up. Maybe Obama should refuse it...

I'm thrilled that Greg Mortenson didn't win it. Although he was nominated, he was hardly deserving.

Son of a missionary, a former army Medic and mountaineer, he has made it his mission to build schools for girls in places where opium dealers and tribal warlords kill people for trying. His Central Asia Institute has built more than 130 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan — a mission which has, along the way, inspired millions of people to view the protection and education of girls as a key to peace and prosperity and progress.

I believe it's already been accepted. To Obama's credit, he has said that he will take the 1.4 million dollar cash prize and donate it to charity.

The point about the past winners is a notable one. However, there are a number of people who can make a nomination, so one wacky idiot nominating a dictator or scumbag doesn't affect the legitimacy of the award, IMO.

Anyone taking bets on when this thread will be locked? :D

I guess it's off limits to even mention his name on this site. Too controversial. The last attempt wasn't even bad or ugly, other than a bunch of clowns coming in and demanding that the thread be locked and infractions be dealt simply because of the news that the president was awarded the prize. I wish there was still evidence of the thread so I could prove my point.

I'm sure it would still be around if you opened it in the Sandbox.

I agree.

I didn't realize there was already a thread about Obama winning, I wish it was around but locked so I could read it. I'd like to see how it all went down. If people could manage to be respectful of others we wouldn't have this problem.

I was a little confused as to why Obama won, but after some thinking I decided that people need to understand Nobel Peace Prize recipients aren't chosen in regards to their own personal opinion of a candidate, but rather an overall global opinion. For most, Barack Obama is a symbol of hope and peace and that is why he won the Nobel Peace Prize. I still think it's a bit odd, but for a lot of people around the world, Obama is an icon.

I agree.

:D

It was my fault. I was the OP. People saw the "potential" for it to get ugly, saw I started the thread, knowing I don't care for the guy or the hype much, and mod preemptively shut it down.

The fact that I replied to this thread has probably doomed this thread to be deleted as well.
