I think threads like this get locked and/or deleted before things get out of hand sometimes because it usually does.

If you doomed this thread by replying ... so be it ...

Your opinion is valid and so are the opinions of others.

I started this thread because the whole thing came out of the blue.

I just don't understand how a Nobel Peace Prize can be given on potential and hope and no accomplishments.

Is there a policy on political threads? I don't really see any posted, so I actually thought they weren't allowed. I've long wanted to post some threads where opinions such as abortion, gay marriage, etc can be discussed.

Those topics will get a thread closed. Alot of people can't discuss those things without resorting to name calling and bad feelings.

The policy is don't do it. Probably be only temporary and mods will eventually delete it. Do it enough, And I think it is not appreciated. It can and does get ugly, so I understand the mods judgement and action, usually.

But I still start them on occasion when news is big enough, like this Nobel peace prize announcement. Someone was bound to anyway.

I believe the notion is that there other places to go to discuss politics than a toy collectible forum?

No need to expose your wacky ideas here and make us hate you. :monkey3

I was a little confused as to why Obama won, but after some thinking I decided that people need to understand Nobel Peace Prize recipients aren't chosen in regards to their own personal opinion of a candidate, but rather an overall global opinion. For most, Barack Obama is a symbol of hope and peace and that is why he won the Nobel Peace Prize. I still think it's a bit odd, but for a lot of people around the world, Obama is an icon.

I can understand that, but I think a person should at least achieve something before receiving it.

Political threads are indeed forbidden, this one skates on thin ice since it isn't political, but it has the potential and likely the destiny to become one. I personally feel political threads are best left off the board. Things got really ugly around here during the last election.

The mods definitely have to walk a very fine line between shutting something down too early or too late. And I think too early is better than too late. But it does suck when a thread is nice and civil and has a good discussion going and gets shut down.

Word is that he was nominated only 2 weeks into his presidency, so if you thought 10 months was premature, what about that short amount of time to consider a nomination. Wasn't he mainly and solely in campaign mode still?

I just guess I'm blind or stupid or immune because I just don't understand this global appeal. Last time I checked, the president serves the people of the USA, not the other way around.

I don't know about two weeks, but I'm pretty sure that nominations are in February, so two weeks would be about right, maybe a bit longer.

It would be nice if people could intelligently discuss policy without the ideological politics, but it is too difficult for most people to make the distinction, apparently.

But trying to think about this from the board policy's perspective, it is a toy forum, as Mr. Chicken suggests, and given the bad feelings and trouble that ideological clashes cause, I can certainly understand being as cautious as possible given the irrelevancy of these topics to what the board exists for.

The trickier issue is that there are many controversial issues that aren't overtly political or religious--Michael Jackson, Paris Hilton's virginity, etc. And ultimately, you can't get away from discussions that people hold strong feelings on or that spur heated debate on a public forum--be it on toys or other things. So, I don't know that arbitrarily drawing the line on a particular group of topics makes as much sense as making a judgment call based on the specific topic of interest, and the direction of the conversation.

I find it funny is that the nomination period deadline for the Prize was 2 weeks after he became President. So I can see that he did SO much in those 2 weeks that warranted his nomination for the Nobel Prize......................................................................................................................................................

I'm still baffled as to why he won the Nobel....what did he achieved other than being the first very tanned president of the most powerful nation!?

Nothing. It seems, that even people with Ph.Ds are as stupid as the people of this country to believe he's doing anything.

I think it is funny how the audience gasped when it was announced, and the White House was baffled, as well. Honestly, I don't think Obama wanted it (yet), because it is just creating more problems for him than anything else, and he knows that he doesn't deserve it for any of his existing accomplishments.

It does seem to be a choice based purely on Obama's attempts to engage the international community, and the fact that the rest of the world thought that Bush (rightly or wrongly) promoted conflict by refusing to deal with states that it didn't like. But maybe that is what the award is for. If it is truly a symbolic award more than a reward based on merit, then I think the choice is fine. And based on some past recipients, I think this is a fair assumption. Unfortunately, a lot of people won't put much stock in the award now (who might have previously), but it's just an award that some Swedes give out. Who cares, anyway? :huh

That last couple sentences is exactly how I feel. I've lost any credibility for the award, knowing there were more eligible nominees. I honestly laughed when I first heard, thought it was another skit on my right wing extremist AM radio talk show. When I realized it was true, I laughed harder.

I think the global reaction is amusing too. They seem to find it as funny as I do. There's not much I can do about what is happening around the globe, so now I just try to find how humorous and incredible it all is. I'm talking in so many areas and issues, it truly is F'n madness. And the job of cleaning it up by our elected officials is also very comical.

Edit: After writing this and then rereading it, I'd like to clarify or revise what I meant in saying that I think the award has been awarded to some very deserving and notable heroes and philanthropist and deserving civil rights activists with previous, real, and lhumanitarian acts of good will under their belt. I just don't think that was the case this go around.

It was my fault. I was the OP. People saw the "potential" for it to get ugly, saw I started the thread, knowing I don't care for the guy or the hype much, and mod preemptively shut it down.

The fact that I replied to this thread has probably doomed this thread to be deleted as well.
Way to go Mesa.
