You do understand gravity is "only" a scientific theory with the same standing as evolution by natural selection, right? Kind of shows how silly the ID crowd is.

They're no more silly than you. Theory is theory. NO one alive KNOWS how it all began. They may puff up and say GOD or BIG BANG...but no one knows. Each group claiming to have the answer is as silly as the other. Everyone will get the chance to test theirs...once.

There seems to be a some confusion about why gravity and evolution by natural selection are called theories in science, and how that relates to everyday theories. This should help dispel some of the confusion:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory

The closest equivalent to a scientific theory in everyday language is "fact."

Wow. Someone does a LOT of Reader's Digest Word Power games.:rotfl Your definition of colloquial is obviously not universal here. I subscribe to ID but not from ANY religious basis. I think Big Bangers are superfluous.

It is what it is. Different fields use different terms in different ways. Ignoring that or pretending it isn't so is moronic. The word "theory" means a third thing in mathematics and a fourth thing in literature, incidentally. So when someone criticizes evolution as "just a theory" it plainly illustrates they have absolutely no idea what they're talking about and can be immediately discounted as a credible player.

I think Big Bangers are superfluous.

The Big Bang has nothing to do with the theory of evolution by natural selection.

To a scientist yes, but not IN science. There are plenty of scientist's theories that do not directly correlate to a science theory. Just as there are many scientist's theories that will only equate to "fact" in their own little world. Nothing can be proven only disproved and even then someone could philosophically debate that.

More accurately, there are plenty of scientists whose hypotheses are not scientific theories - no one would dispute that. It needlessly confuses the issue to use both meanings of theory in the same sentence. Anyone want to start a science thread? We should move this one back to Obama's speech.

"Theory" in scientific parlance does not mean the same thing as "theory" in colloquial speech.

exactly!!!!!!!!!!

how can we expect the masses a greater understanding of our planet if we cannot expect them a greater understanding of their own language?

I believe in evolution. However, I also believe life was planted here at some point. I believe it was more organized than the "primordial soup" tripe thrown about also.

I think at the rate the world is going, we might all become tripe soup soon!

Some interesting stuff coming out about Sarah Palin's pastor Ed Kalnins that should have people like Woodsy doing some rhetorical gymnastics to excuse slamming Wright... :rotfl

What'd her pastor say?

Aside from claiming all Democrats are doomed to burn in Hell and describing the Iraq invasion as Jesus' will? He's also an end days whack job and says he has direct chats with God. :rotfl

Either this stuff matters or it doesn't. Time to eat some crow or tear apart your own candidate, fellas. :peace

Well, you can't prove he doesn't.:lol:lol:lol

I'd like to know the context. Democrats who choose not to be saved by Christ are indeed going to hell according to the Bible. Democrats, period? I have a hard time believing a real Christian pastor would say that. Do you have a link for these alleged quotes? I did a quick google search and the most dramatic quote I could find was something to the effect of "non-Christians will have a horrible surprise when they die," which of course is absolutely true according to the Bible.

Khev, you should come to my neck of the woods if you think Christian pastors don't say such things. Believe me, they damn people to hell for just about everything around here. Hell's gonna be pretty full! :lol

Of course they don't realize that they have no power over such things.

Not all Christians are the same nor should they all be lumped into one category. There are plenty of fanatics, but there are plenty of great Christians. Let's get the talk back to Obama's speech.
