UDK is the Unreal Development Kit, basically the free version of Unreal Engine 3 which is a game engine used by many many games.

You won't get sick if you aren't moving around, if you're stationary and you just look around you'll be fine. It's when you start moving that you get dizzy.

Ah, gotcha.

Yeah, thats what I hear. They say that turning the camera with yuor head feels good and natural, but when you strafe or whip the camera with a mouse, its really odd feeling and creates that disconnect. I've noticed a lot of people using xbox controllers. It gives them a smoother, more gentle movement with the analog. The disorientation seems to be much less so with games where youre seated. Like, some of the space and flight sims out there. It's when you press the "w" key and take off running while seated in your chair that your brain says "wha?"

Valve is already supporting it so they have official settings available. I'm sure Id is working on some stuff too. This is the very early stages of development though, so not much is out there in full game form. Half Life 2 along with episodes 1 and 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal 1 and 2 are all playable now. I believe Doom 3 is as well. Mostly, it's mods that are not going to give you perfect experiences because they're not working with the original dev teams. 3D might be weaker as a result. Tons of demos out there and a few early builds available to play but like everything else, it's early so youre usually dealing with alpha builds. Here's a comprehensive list of whats going on right now. There's a couple programs being used outside of Oculus' supervision in the mod community. Vireio and vorpX. These are programs that are sort of forcing finished games (like say..Bioshock) into a Oculus mode. Results will vary of course.

There's some games that have native support but there's quite a few that people have created plugins for to add support, things like Skyrim or Mirror's Edge. I haven't tested it much, it worked with Mirror's Edge but the settings weren't correct so it felt weird (like you're the wrong size). Team Fortress 2 worked pretty well.

So what do you need besides the head set? Does it work off your existing computer's resources?

Your computer needs to be able to support two displays. It comes with a DVI and HDMI cable depending on what you are using and then a USB cable.
I wouldn't buy it though until they put out the next one. Right now it's really just for developers. The next release will have improvements for consumers and there should be more stuff by then. Right now, I want a higher resolution display (right now it's 1280x800 which ends up being 640x800 since it displays both eyes) and I'd also like to see if they can get it to be wireless. They were demoing a version that had a smaller 1920x1080 resolution display which would be a nice improvement.

^basically with that, you would hold a wireless controller in each hand that have joysticks, buttons, and triggers along with motion tracking, and then there's 3 other motion trackers, one you would like clip to your shirt and then the other two you could clip to your shoes, it would provide enough data to track you in a pretty big area.

Yeah, it's pretty much plug and play from what I've seen. the challenge comes from trying to run software that's still very early in development or existing games that have mods to run on the oculus. Those will require some tweaking before they work properly. I understand that games like Half Life 2 will have an option for the Rift and games that were programmed for it will of course run fine on it. Of course, you can also get the Razor Hydra controllers. Theyre essentially Wii style motion controllers for games that support it. I believe HL2 does...as does all of Valves games. Trippy.

But..you could be right. Porn, games, movies...who knows what else. The demo of the VR Cinema shows a ton of potential for movie watching.

Porn or movies? Or both? The VR cinema thing is really cool. It's suppose to simulate sitting in a theater in a very convincing way.

It's hard to see here, but you can get an idea of it. You can even get out of your seat and sit anywhere you want and it'll still look like you're looking up at the screen from whichever seat you're in. I can imagine a mod where you can share virtual space with a friend or friends and they'd be represented as an avatar of some kind. Chatting and whatnot while watching a movie in this huge theater.

This thing sounds interesting, from what I understand listening to the indie dev guy explaining his experience, sounds like everything you see will actually be life size, which is a crucial part of virtual reality, and something you can't get in normal 2D/3D play through a monitor. The life size aspect sounds much more impressive than the stereoscopic 3D itself, which we can already experience in 3D movies and games.

So imagine playing something like 'Bioshock 3' inside the rift, you'll be killing lifesize 3D enemies coming at you. All the buildings, cars, trees, etc will all be life size around you, and you're inside the game... that sounds pretty amazing and cant wait to eventually try this tech.

So imagine playing something like 'the last of us' when inside the rift, you'll be killing lifesize 3D zombies coming at you. All the buildings, cars, trees, etc will all be life size... that sounds pretty amazing and cant wait to eventually try this tech.

It's very specifically designed to try and match your perspective if you were actually in the game, so that things appear to be the right size.

The two big deals about why this are special are the FOV--field of view which means how much of the display fills your vision, in this case it's much more than any other display because it uses lenses that distort the image so that it fills almost your entire view. And the other thing is the rotation tracking which is very fast. Up until now, VR headsets were very expensive and weren't as high quality. For instance Sony makes a 3D headset that has no tracking and while it's higher resolution the display is much much smaller in your vision and it costs $800, this one is $300.
And as far as 3D goes, it's the best 3D you can possibly experience, other methods will have some amount of bleeding of the two images together or at least the 3D would end up being dark. With this, since it's displaying images separately to each eye you don't lose any brightness and there's no way to get any bleeding. Watching a movie actually works pretty well, the only downside is the low-resolution screen, but that's probably the easiest thing to fix. The next release will have at least a 1920x1080 screen compared to the 1280x800 screen it has now. And there's companies that are working on screens that would do 2560x1600 at the size that the headset can use.

This is what I have been looking for for as long as I remember. Hopefully the consumer version lives up to all the hype.
