I've been following this for a year and its one of the big reasons I'm moving to PC gaming.

The games I want to play - Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen - are space sims and will be perfect for this.

I know both games are already investigating including OR capability, Star Citizen in particular very actively.

I was disappointed that 'next gen' systems Xone/PS4 don't don't have this sort of thing included.

The 3D is key to the sense of scale. Everyone who uses one of these comments on how well the sense of scale is conveyed. Thats largely because of the 3D. Like Viper said..this is real 3D, not the forced 3D you see with TVs or at the theaters. Those use glasses that try to seperate a single image into two images. It's never perfect and thats why you see the ghosting or crosstalk that he mentioned and the reason that those forms of 3D look a little weird...and the reason some people experience discomfort and headaches. Real 3D (a dedicated image to each eye)like the Rift gives a much more natural and convincing since of things like depth, volume and scale because its essentially working the same way your eyes see real objects. Combined with the fov and enclosed goggles) and you've got as convincing a sense of "being there" that you can have at this point.

Star Citizen should be incredible with the Rift.

There's been rumors about both consoles. MS patented their own version of a VR head set some time this year and theres rumblings that Sony is working on something too. Oculus is content to focus on PC gaming, but I dont think it would take much to adapt it to consoles. The interface with PC is just usb and an hdmi cable. I'm sure it could be done.

It's very specifically designed to try and match your perspective if you were actually in the game, so that things appear to be the right size.

The two big deals about why this are special are the FOV--field of view which means how much of the display fills your vision, in this case it's much more than any other display because it uses lenses that distort the image so that it fills almost your entire view. And the other thing is the rotation tracking which is very fast. Up until now, VR headsets were very expensive and weren't as high quality. For instance Sony makes a 3D headset that has no tracking and while it's higher resolution the display is much much smaller in your vision and it costs $800, this one is $300.
And as far as 3D goes, it's the best 3D you can possibly experience, other methods will have some amount of bleeding of the two images together or at least the 3D would end up being dark. With this, since it's displaying images separately to each eye you don't lose any brightness and there's no way to get any bleeding. Watching a movie actually works pretty well, the only downside is the low-resolution screen, but that's probably the easiest thing to fix. The next release will have at least a 1920x1080 screen compared to the 1280x800 screen it has now. And there's companies that are working on screens that would do 2560x1600 at the size that the headset can use.

They've said that they'd like higher rezs than 1080p, but as much as a 4k headset would be amazing, the rigs it will take to run the games properly will have to be beast. 4k at 60fps with vsync displaying stereo 3D....ouch.

Oh definitely, I know its most likely in the future of these consoles somewhere.....I just expected at least one of the big 2 to wow us at their launch previews with something OR like.

....instead we got Microsoft kicking one of the most awesome own goals of all time.

Yeah, they'll probably do 1080p and then it'll be long before they go higher than that since most people wouldn't be able to run games at 2560x1600

Microsoft did indeed file a patent a week or so ago about a kind of AR/VR headset. I think it'll be something they announce next year as a new addon for the Xbox One. I'd also be surprised if Sony hasn't experimented with one as well since they have actually made some headsets before.

Sony's been interested in this kind of thing for a while now, but their first couple attempts were less than impressive. Of course now, they can see what Oculus is doing and spring board better designs off of that. I'd expect Sony to have something to show before MS, but who knows.

I think I started this thread on the wrong forum. Maybe people will feel different after trying it. That's always one of the challenges of selling something that needs to be seen in person to understand.

I saw a kickstarter for a sort of treadmill for the Rift and the idea of going for my morning run in Liberty City, the old west, Gotham or Shadow Moses has me very very interested.

I know the one you're talking about. it's an interesting concept. Not sure I'd go that far with it. It's a big bulky thing that sits in a room taking up a lot of space and it works in conjunction with the Kinect. It's pretty funny watching people try to use it. It must be a strange feeling.

They haven't come out and confirmed anything or made any announcements, but there's a lot of rumors floating around. I hope it's true. I'll be very interested in seeing what they've come up with. Hopefully something better than their new $2k hmd viewer.

I hadn't seen that prioVR thing before. It seems to function pretty well, but I can't see it catching on. The average person just isn't willing to go through the trouble of strapping all those sensors on.

The Sixense is a much better solution I think. The tracking seems to be solid and it's easy enough to use. Wireless is a big plus.

I still think the Kinect or something like it will ultimately be the best solution.
