Saw something on History channel the other night about the real pirates these are based on. The real pirates were pretty underwhelming. Of course, you'd expect Hollywood to exaggerate. But the real Blackbeard, wasn't quite the terror you'd think in terms of how much pirating he did. Still a badass though. He was known for being fearless. But statistically speaking, he looks like an old maid compared to Black Bart. Learning that took me completely off guard. And, this idea they all ride around in Spanish Galleons, is also bunk. Many had clippers and sloops, small fast ships. However, while Blackbeard didn't plunder nearly as many ships as other pirates, his reputation netted him the Queen Anne's Revenge, which was the largest ship to be taken by pirates. The French that originally sailed the Queen Anne's Revenge under another name of course, gave her up after seeing Blackbeards colors, despite having him outgunned and out manned by significant numbers.
At one point he had blockaded Charleston SC claiming all that entered and left the port was theirs. Word had reached Blackbeard that a fleet had been dispatched from England to purge the area of pirates, and he decided to sail further up the now US coast. Near the end of Blackbeard's reign, he ran the QAR aground off the coast of North Carolina, they suspect on purpose so he could retire, and left all his men on board the derelict ship save a handful of his most loyal whom he took with him. He fled to some hideaway island up the coast, and met his match to an up and coming young British officer named Lieutenant Maynard during a sword fight on the deck of the British ship. The governor of Virginia apparently didn't take to well to rumors that Teach was anchored in his waters, and offered Maynard a bounty to go after him. And, thus was the end of Blackbeard. It's an interesting turn of events. You all should look that story up.
If you get a chance to catch that show, it's pretty educative too.
