Looking over the 'show us your shelves' section, it seems to be about even when it comes to who displays their figures behind glass or on an open shelf.

I just don't have the bandwidth to check out all the threads though (except when I'm at work:wink1:) - so I thought maybe a poll might shed some light.

The reason I'm interested is because I'm split between the desire to constantly pose my figures - and wanting to keep them as pristine as possible (especially the dust-prone caped figures).

So - who's hands-off and who's hands-on?

i loved the open shelves for so long, but recently i have given up on dusting and my collection looks messed up.

I'm open shelf.

I have recently discovered canned air. It makes dusting a lot less of a drag.

Well, glass cases are a great dust deterrent but there is no way to keep statues and collectibles completely dust free. Just do your best to dust, It's the nature of the beast. At some point in my ever evolving collecting habits I decided to always go the "quality over quantity" route and I do not envy those that have hundreds of figures :lol

Im moving into a house the end of Sept and I will be getting a room for a "Movie Room" so Im on the fence on what to do with the display. Im thinking my more expensive figures/collectibles will go behind glass and the "lesser" stuff will still be out on open shelves for people to "play with". :D

Glass for the good stuff, open shelf for the lesser high end stuff.

Hahaha..well, what i mean't was like some of the older SSC 1/6th figures and like maybe Neca and Mcf ____..stuff like that, various Transformers stuff and Star Wars,DC Direct, maybe select mini busts etc.

You on the spawn boards as well aren't you? Can't wait to see pics of your movie room

Depends....expensive statues and busts tend to be behind glass. Whereas cheaper things like action figures and other toys can be open air.

Cost of glass, better lighting, and usually a deeper and wider bookcase as nothing can protrude. All around a more expensive option but it looks way better if done right.

Guess it depends on what you collect. With 1/6 figures, I like open so I can pose them and such.

I've been pondering this lately, too, while perusing various drool-worthy picture threads.

I'm still a noob and have a very small collection at the moment. But I figure, one day, I'll have to decide how I properly want to display my stuff. Right now they're all on a shelf, but my room gets pretty damn dusty. So, when I tire of the constant dusting, I guess I'll have to get some clear display cabinets.

There are some pieces I just wouldn't put behind glass, though. Not necessarily based on value, but just because some pieces need to be out and about. But that's just me.

Has anyone ever seen any horizontal glass or plexiglass cabinets that you could place on a shelf, tall enough to house 1/6th figures? Maybe 1.25 metres long, or there abouts?

Haven't even bothered looking yet, so I have no idea what's available, but this thread has the cogs in my head turning.

The thing that you're missing though by having an open display is two huge factors. One is preventing dust (maybe not completely) but the biggest loss is lighting. Just like in movies, when they put together costumes, lighting has a huge factor in design.
Take for example HT wolverine, if you have him in the open, sometimes he has this stoic look, but put him in a lighted display and tilt his head down, it highlights the lines on his face and the figure can have an angry look. I can see a huge difference whenever I take a figure out of the display case to change his pose, and when you put it back in the case, you can see a huge difference in the look of the figure.

:exactly: - looking at Maulfan's and other members' pics I really appreciate how lighting can change a figure's mood as much as the posing. I feel that with the poor lighting I have in my room I'm not getting the most out of my figures. Spend the money on display to get value for money from your figs is what I'm coming around to...

Behind glass, no dust to come in so easily and no hungry hands of friends touching my plastic toys :lol
