Ive been lurking this forum and noticed alot of people saying they buy 2 or 3 or more extras to resell later. Views opionions on resellers or scalpers? Honestly i think its a good way to regain the money you spent but also pretty crappy considering they will overprice it and probably sell it. Especially if its exclusive.

This is an age-old debate among collectors and will probably never be answered to anyone's satisfaction...

I have no problems with resellers. This is an expensive hobby and if I can minimize my expenses I'll do it. For example if you buy doubles of Hot Toys Predator figures and sell off the second one for $300 you basically get the first one for free. I'm getting 5 Hot Toys Jokers! Hopefully that'll get me a Tumbler for free :D

There is nothing stopping anyone selling anything they happen to buy, whether they do it with the intention of selling, or selling it when they tire of it or need extra money. No one makes people pay a higher price later on. These are collectibles we are talking about. If no one collected them they wouldn't get a higher price later.

When people get all uppity they tend to disregard the risk that a flipper takes by buying multiples, and only focus on the big money they make, when it becomes known. The only valid reason, some have, for arguing against this practice is when they think they are being mister nice guy, selling a much sort after item to a 'good' home, only to find the buyer has in turn flipped their good will for a profit.

Let me just point you to my "for sale" thread, left overs from when I was still green and thought buying duplicates would be profitable. Ahh, you can find it, but it isn't really a good idea. Who knows what's going to go up? I thought for sure the GG LOTR stuff was gold, but now they can be found for much less than retail. Same with latest potter stuff.

The only sure thing in this hobby seems to be Marvel and Alien/Predator for resale, but who has that much extra to play/gamle with on a regular basis?

I wouldn't do it simply due to the added hassle of having to 'resell' something. I only buy what I want for the here and now.

Resellers are a different beast than scalpers/flippers and shouldn't be categorized with them. A reseller would an official Sideshow retailer that many of us buy from all the time. A scalper/flipper would be the ones looking to play the toy market as opposed to the stock market.

The thread title and wording is a bit confusing and might offend some of the great resellers we have on this board.

A reseller as in a retailer, is a completely different animal than a scalper.

And with retail collectible prices going up so quickly scalping doesn't really make a lot of sense. Perhaps one in 10 items actually increase in value and there's no real way to tell which they will be. It would make far more sense and be easier to spend $300 on a stock you think will appreciate.

You can sort of predict which ones will go up in value with Hot Toys figures. Take a look at the Predator figures and how much they increase in value in a couple of months. TDK figures will probably also go up (big movie + no Sideshow distribution) and the Predator 1 crew have a good chance as well. Unless Hot Toys decides to start cranking out higher production numbers I see this trend continuing for now. But on the whole I agree that it just isn't worth the time and risk to resell.

I personally dont see anything wrong with collectors who buy multiples to flip to further fund their collection. As long as they dont taunt other people with their hoardes.

Scalpers who who make a career out of flipping and have no real interests in collecting are scum but it's a free country so whatever.

If you have the $$$$ to buy multiples to flip later then more power to you. "Don't hate the player, hate the game!" If we did'nt pay those high prices on evil bay alot of flippers would stop because they are taking a big risk.

Gotta disagree. My 401k is in the crapper. I can pick appreciable collectibles with an almost guaranteed upside. In this economy make money however you can(legally of course). Those who want to hate speculators...feel free. We won't lose any sleep.:D
