I don't see why he wouldn't want to do it...

OH POOR ME I DON'T WANT TO SPEND 3 YEARS IN ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD, DIRECTING ONE OF THE MOST EPIC STORIES OF ALL TIME, CEMENTING MY LEGACY OF BEST FANTASY DIRECTOR OF ALL TIME, AND OH YEAH MAKING MILLIONS WHILE I AM AT IT AND PROBABLY A COUPLE MORE OF THOSE SILLY GOLD STATUES

These Hollywood types I tell ya... I'll never understand.

What i've been saying all along.

I'm saying that Ringers tend to be a more mature crowd and won't go too crazy acting in some ways like something was personally ripped away from them. As tends to be the case when SW fans really don't like something. If thats the type of reaction you're waiting to see.

I think the only way you see ringers go crazy is if someone truly awful gets forced on the project.

For the record, the material for the movies have already been created. And at this rate, I doubt that PJ will let someone in who could ruin the material.

Compare this to the SW saga where even the script was disappointing.

So, to add to Josh's comments, it's hard not to make money on this one, and disappoint fans.

I'm just surprised PJ doesn't want to bankroll it himself. Then again, I forget that MGM has to have their money.

At this point, the project needs to move forward or it will fall apart completely. They need someone of PJ's stature to get on board, and the only person left is PJ himself. Yes, they could get a Brett Ratner to sing up this late in development and work for cheap with no creative input, but the entire universe would object and the project would lose credibility and respect. Guillermo was PJ's creative escape hatch from the director's chair, but that fell through and now he either has to do it himself or watch it fall apart.

His business sense and financial investment will prevail over his lack of interest as a director and he will likely take the job--but do we really want him to do it just because of pressure and money? I want him to invest that kind of time because he is passionate about making it. If he signs on as director, it will very clearly be for all the wrong reasons. (I can live with that--but can he?)

My hunch is that once he starts to storyboard everything and go over the preproduction art (moreso than he already has to this point at least) that fire for all things Tolkien will be rekindled and he'll bring his A game to the project.

That's a very optimistic, idealistic take on the situation. Especially since it's pretty obvious that Jackson was burned out on the Tolkien stuff. We shall see...

In a 2002 interview Jackson stated that he struggled staying focused while making The Two Towers. He said he had a harder time with that film after the excitement of creating FOTR and was constantly looking ahead to ROTK, his favorite of the series. He even moved Shelob to ROTK to heighten the drama in the final chapter even further.

He made it sound like TTT was a hurried, slightly unfocused effort which blows my mind considering it was still an A+/first rate film. If that's what we can expect for a Tolkien movie he isn't fully invested in then bring on The Hobbit.

I don't think TTT was that great.

I have to agree. Watching all the Docs on the DVD's and stuff he's said since then that all its gonna take is that one little spark. He knows he has to step in and do what he can to basically save this.

He loves Middle Earth and Tolkiens material. I have no doubt he will make these two films something Ringers can be proud of.

Eh. We'll see. And I don't think TTT was that great.

TTT was pretty sweet. Not the best of the three but still pretty darn good.

As far as him being burned out he was right afterwards. Its been 7 years since ROTK came out and by the time these come out nearly 10. He'll be fine.

TTT is easily the weakest.
