just got a Canon t4i w/ 18-55 mm lens. Is there anything I should know about DSLR's? What type of bag should I look for? Tripod? Flash? Any suggestions would love to hear them. Also best way to learn what the camera can and can't do. TIA.

What type of bag depends on what you want to put in it.

I have a sling style backpack that holds all my gear in a pretty compact state. 2 DSLR bodies, 3 lenses, 1 external flash and odds and ends (batteries, memory...). Wasn't overly expensive either.

I would recommend an external flash, you don't need to go crazy (they get pretty pricey). Tripod... I rarely use unless I'm doing landscape/HDR (which in may case isn't very often). Have yet to use it in a portrait shoot.

Youtube is honestly a great resource. Check some books out of the library. Read lots, but also be sure to actually go out and shoot. If you don't apply what you learn, you'll lose it.

And also look into some editing software and play around to see what you can acheive. I love Lightroom myself. Lots of good books and tutorials to help you out. I don't get into Photoshop all that often unless I 'have to'.

Shooting a destination this week. Thought I'd share a few I've taken around the resort with my new Canon 6D.

Great stuff beeshaw! Really like the b&w one.

I have a question for everybody. Has anyone ever accidentally formatted their CF card, and lost all their photos, and then recovered them? It happened to me today, and I've been scouring the internet for a recovery program, but everyone (free trials) I download doesn't recognize my Mark 2. Any thoughts?

I hope I'm able to get help here as I have been struggling with this for years!

I love taking photos of my toys, recently I've acquired a DSLR. A Nikon D7000 to be exact, and I thought my woes were gone.

I have never been so wrong, for all these years I have been trying to take a photo whereby everything is in focus. And I thought a DSLR would be able to do that, and nope it doesn't.

I am still trying to figure out the techniques to focus everything in a shot, hope someone here is able to help.

Auel...

You need to look into "Tilt shift lenses". They are rather pricey but could be what you are looking for.

:clap Some amazing photos in there. I love the "Bird's Eye View" and "Out of Reach".
I would love to go to New York again.

Thank you. It means a lot.:)

Wow. Really great shots. They let you use a tripod in front of Radio City??? These look amazing. What are you shooting with? Lenses?

Thank you.

All shots are handheld. I did take my tripod with me but on stepping foot outside the hotel I soon realised if wasn't the most practical thing to take with me. Luckily there are lots of street lights to lean up against. :D

I took my Canon 18-55, 10-22 & 100-300 lenses with me. I bought myself the 10-22 days before I went to New York. Such a great investment; I was able to get some great shots with the wide lens.

Use a higher aperture number/ smaller aperture (ie. f/11-22) for a wider depth of field. Also don't zoom, and use smaller focal length.
