Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I justed picked up the trilogy on Blu-Ray yesterdary. I first watched DMC. That might be my favorite. Holy crap does it look amazing in Hi Def! I know that technically COTBP is probably the best filmmaking effort and that people like to badmouth the two sequels but I really love them.

The cannibal island sequence and entire finale of DMC (from when Will, Jack, and the Commodore start their swordfight on the island to the very end of the flick) are some of my favorite sequences in the series. Great swashbuckling entertainment.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I'm with ya!

From a storytelling POV, CotBP is the best because it's a completed story.

DMC is like Empire, it's unfinished...but I have to say I find it the most watchable of the 3.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I love the whole series, start to finish. As long as Johnny Depp is in it as Jack Sparrow, I'm game for any Pirates film. As you can see from my recently posted collection, I'm a Jack fan :lol

I just love the trilogy, it's just fun escapism and I think that's why some favor DMC most, it was the most fun I think, Curse and World's End were pretty serious overall, they had their humor but there was also some dark and serious story to it, but DMC is pretty much pure fun.

I like DMC, but I'd say it's my #3, Curse is #1 of course, and AWE is 2nd for me, it has it's WTF moments, but I thought it brough back some of the better elements of Curse, like the more direct and pivotal fights, like Jack and Davy during the maelstrom. Jack dueling with Barbossa and Davy Jones are my two most favorite parts of Pirates, I love a good sword fight, be it lightsabers or true swords, and there's just a great mix of Jack wit and hardcore villainy and shocking moments in each fight that make them great, like the first time you see Barbossa stab Jack and think he's dead until he hits the moonlight, I didn't really catch how he kept one of the cursed medallions until like the 2nd viewing.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I remember seeing Curse in theaters and everyone freaking out when Barbossa stabbed Jack. Not many people in my theater caught it. I don't think I did the first time. There were a lot of gasps and "oh no!"s.

The maelstrom battle is probably my favorite of the series. So many great elements in that sequence. All the best characters, with action, spectacle, humor and just good old fashioned fun to spare. I remember sitting in the theater during one of the close-ups of Jack aiming his pistol with a twinkle in his eye as he swung through the maelstrom on a rope and I couldn't help but think that good pirate fun just didn't get any better than that. :D

Yeah the series had a few cool moments like that. Just yesterday when I watched DMC for like the fourth time overall I finally noticed that quick shot of someone's legs lying on the floor in the backroom of Calypso's little shack early in the film when they first meet her. The monkey takes special note of the person for a quick two seconds and then they cut back to everyone else in the meeting. It finally registered with me that we were seeing the still dead body of Barbossa!

I watched DMC like over a dozen times, it took a coworker pointing that part out for me to notice. It made a lot of things make sense.

The biggest didn't know thing for me was the extras after the credits, especially Curse, makes Jack the Monkey being undead in DMC make sense. Before that, I always thought they messed up the continuity.

eBay user tmsamm still has one of each, if you're interested. Not amazing deals or anything, but he will combine shipping.
